What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, promote academic excellence, and teach civic responsibility while serving genuine community needs.

Service Learning at Georgia Highlands College

The Office of Adult and Service Learning strives to engage students through service as we prepare them for responsibility and leadership in an evolving global environment. Through curriculum-integrated service experiences, our students, faculty and staff collaborate with local non-profits across five campuses to meet the needs of our local communities in Northwest Ga.

Service Learning is Not:

  • Volunteer work

  • Completing minimum service hours in order to graduate

  • Service assigned as a form of punishment

  • Only for high school or college students

  • One-sided: benefiting only students or only the community

The Benefits of Service Learning:

  • Improves academic grades

  • Increases attendance in school

  • Develops personal and social responsibility

  • Addresses actual needs within a community
