GHC Graduates 548 Students on May 11

GHC held commencement exercises for 548 graduates on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Forum in Rome.  The general ceremony was held in the morning and the nursing pinning/graduation in the afternoon.  Houston Davis, chief academic officer and executive vice chancellor for the University System of Georgia, delivered the keynote address.  Students speakers made opening and closing remarks at the general graduation exercises.  They were Victor Williams, Phi Theta Kappa member and president of B2B/Douglasville, and Andrew West, editor of the award-winning student newspaper Six Mile Post. 

Rome student Christopher Lawson made opening remarks at the afternoon’s pinning and graduation ceremony.  Marietta student Natasha Moore and Rome student Lauren Rader each delivered a class speech.  Rene Disser (Marietta) and Laurie Morris (Rome) recognized the nursing faculty, and Wendy Simmons (Rome) recognized nursing alumni.  Closing remarks were delivered by Kody Chumley, a Marietta student. 

Jon Hershey, dean of the Humanities Division, received the Wesley C. Walraven Faculty Award, and recent retiree Mary Norton, who was special assistant to the president, received the President’s Meritorious Service Award.  Retiring economics professor Dudley Salley carried the ceremonial mace in the morning; Pauline Ruel, associate professor of nursing, carried it in the afternoon.
