(e)mission statement

Welcome to the 4th issue of FC Bytes, the online student magazine of Georgia Highlands College. Much effort has gone into this issue, so take time to read and enjoy because we at FC Bytes aim to please.

In this issue we will display the usual feature section with articles by Dave Sage, Kelly Doegg, and Kerri King to name a few. Dave takes an examining look at jury duty, Kelly delves into a controversial but fascinating view of feminism, and Kerri King brings to life some bittersweet Christmas memories. We also have interviews within--one a very insightful piece by Janice Cross in which she interviews a Vietnam veteran. If anyone has any unanswered questions about the Vietnam War, I suggest you read it. Also an interview with "Wonder Woman" also known as Nelle, a senior citizen who doesn't know the meaning of the word retire, by Debbie Lavoie.

And if that isn't enough, we've added a new section called the "Best Bytes" (found under the "Tasty Bytes" heading). This section gives teachers a chance to show off notable work by various students. Included are power point presentations, projects, papers, essays, etc., on such issues as the MLK assassination, World War II, and banned books--all created by students on campus. And as always we'll have music in "Sound Bytes" (this issue featuring the rap group Strategy), graphic art and photography in "Byte Gallery," and poetry and fiction in "Write Bytes" awaiting you inside.

As a first time contributor to the web zine, I didn't know what to expect from it. Paul Clayton asked me to join the staff and Jon Hershey kept pushing me to help out every time I saw him. They told me that the magazine published work that doesn't fit into the Six Mile Post or the Old Red Kimono. They were right. The web zine publishes work that is mostly by the students, and ultimately for the students. A special honor also contained within this issue is a couple of letters, one from Ben Cleary and one from George Simcoe, who are obviously fans of FC Bytes. If it is good enough for them, it is good enough for me. So this is it; this is what we do. And to sum up the magazine, I was talking to Steve Burns one day about the zine, and I discovered that he is a contributor (see Booger Bytes). He said, "I'm not much of a writer, I'm more of a creator. I like to create." That is just what this online magazine does; it creates.

Thanks to all of the faculty advisors, the editors, and the contributors, but most of all I would like to thank those of you who take time to look at our magazine.
