Course Description

Historical Geology is the study of the origina and evolution of the Earth, its continents, oceans, atmosphere, and life.

Prerequisites
GEOL 1121K with a grade of "C" or better.

Course Objectives

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamental concepts of Historical Geology, including terminology and units of measurement commonly employed, including the Geologic Time Scale, relative and absolute dating, physical and biological evolution of the Earth.

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the essential theories of Historical Geology including the theory of organic evolution and current trends in evolutionary thought.

Students will demonstrate the ability to function in a laboratory or observational setting, gathering data and performing analysis typical of Historical Geology at an elementary level, such as classification and identification of fossils, calculating radiometric dates, and using geologic maps to interpret the geologic history of an area.
