Drug and Alcohol Prevention Class

     Drug and Alcohol Prevention is one of the most important aspects of NYSP.  Campers attend this class twice a week for 50 minutes at a time.  The objective of this class is to show kids the harms of using drugs and alcohol, teach them how to stand up for themselves if they are ever approached about drug use, and define the different types of drugs that are out in the world and how they have a negative effect on your body.  

     One way of incorporating technology into this class is through the use of laptops.  Georgia Highlands College loans the NYSP program 30 laptops for use during the summer.  The laptops are loaded with a drug and alcohol prevention software that has different activities for the campers to explore through in groups. 

Math/Science

     During math and science class, campers deal with a variety of labs from measurement math to the solar system. Campers also learn how different weather storms form and the effects they can have on the earth. Students learn how to figure income based on dropout skills vs. someone with higher education. Campers attend math/science class twice a week. 

     The Math/Science program has only been at Georgia Highlands College for five years now. Not all NYSP programs around the nation have this component, just a certain few. Here at Georgia Highlands College, we are very lucky to have this component as part of our activities.

Enrichment Class

     Enrichment is another component to our educational program. Campers discuss several life-improving skills such as self-esteem, building trust, respecting others, and how to develop friendships. They also learn and discuss different issues such as illness prevention, nutrition, importance of good hygiene, and interviewing skills. These skills can help students to improve their way of life and can also help them in the future.
