Assignments for PSYC 1101 91 CRN 50044  Intro to General Psychology:

On each assignment, please put your name, the date you are turning it in, the date of the quiz that it replaces, the chapter number and title, and, if applicable, the option you have selected.   Assignments must be typed unless the instruction below says,  "In your own handwriting". 

 

Assignment for Chapter One – Psychology as a Science

Option a.  Give examples of two positive and two negative correlations.  For each example, address the issue of causation.

 

Option b. 

Demonstrate an aspect of critical thinking by raising questions about a magazine or newspaper article that addresses a psychological issue.  Use an article that presents more than facts and seems to take a position.  State the position you think has been presented or implied and specify what in the article makes you think the authors or producers are taking a position. List questions you would like to have answered in order to evaluate the position.   Include a copy of the article.   

 

Assignment for Chapter Two  – Neuroscience and Behavior

In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms and concepts on p. 67 of the textbook.  This and other assignments of this type can be done on paper or on a set of index cards to be used as flash cards. 

 

Assignment for Chapter Four – The Developing Person

Option a:  Imagine that you have four children and their ages are thirteen months, four years, nine years, and fourteen years.  Name each child and describe something about each that corresponds with Piaget's stages of cognitive development.   

Option b:  In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms and concepts listed on p.139 and p. 291 of the textbook. 

 

Assignment for Chapter Eight – Memory

Make up a case example about a person who has symptoms of memory impairment that could be consistent with damage to the hippocampus.  Make up a case example about a person who has symptoms of memory impairment that could be consistent with damage to the cerebellum.  Talk about what implications these cases have for “normal” individuals. 

 

Assignment for Chapter Seven – Learning

Option a:  Write about an example of classical conditioning.  Identify the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), the unconditioned response (UCR), the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the conditioned response (CR). 

Option b:  In your own words, explain how classical conditioning differs from operant conditioning and give an example of each. 

Option c:  In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms and concepts listed on p. 255 of the textbook.

 

Assignment for Chapter 10 – Motivation

Option a:  In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms on p. 377.   

Option b:  Describe Maslow's hierarchy and then suggest how a change in life circumstance might change a person's focus of attention and level of functioning. 

 

Assignment for Chapter 12 -   Personality

Option a:  In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms on p. 467.   

Option b:  Describe two defense mechanisms and apply them to everyday life.  If you quote Myers, use APA style.  For each defense mechanism, give at least one example of a person using that defense. 

 

Assignment for Chapter 15- Social Psychology

Option a:  In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms on p. 581.
Option b:  Stanley Milgram took the position that people are more like sheep than wolves.  Explain how the results of his experiments support this position.

 

Assignment for Chapter 13 – Psychological Disorders: 

Option a:  Link a concept in Chapter 13, Psychological Disorders, with something you learned in another chapter.

Option b:  In your own handwriting, provide brief definitions/explanations of the terms on p. 505.
