This course is a review of intermediate algebra. Topics include properties of numbers, linear equations, inequalities, quadratic equations, polynomials, and rational expressions and roots.
Prerequisite: Satisfactory placement scores/MATH 020/Math 0097
Evaluation: In this course, you will have five (5) tests and the Compass Exit Test.
You will be allowed to drop your lowest test grade.
Grades will be assigned as follows:
90 – 100 A
80 - 89 B
70 – 79 C
60 - 69 D
0 - 59 F
A grade of W cannot be assigned after mid-quarter except in unusual cases, and then only with the approval of the Vice President. Please note that any student enrolled in a credit level course cannot drop a developmental course without first dropping all credit level courses for any reason. Also, any student absent more than five days cannot receive a grade of IP.
Attendance: Regular attendance is essential. It is recommended that you attend class every day. Please consult with the instructor in advance if an absence becomes necessary. If you are absent from class on the day of a test without consulting the instructor in advance, you will not be allowed to make up the test and a grade of zero (0) will be assigned for this test.
Extended Absence Policy (NEW)
“Students, who have circumstances that prevent them from continuing to attend classes over an extended period of time, sometimes request that the faculty member permit them to submit work in absentia to receive credit to complete the course.
If the concurrent absences will constitute more than 15% of the class sessions for the term, then written permission from the Division Chair is required before any course assignments can be completed while missing class. The student must be in good academic standing in the course to make the request. All approved coursework must be completed by the end of the semester in which the course was begun.”
Tutorials: The Math Lab, located in the Tutorial Center in the Library, offers one on one tutoring as well as software and videos to accompany your text book. Please take advantage of the excellent services offered by the Tutorial Center if you are having any difficulties. Act promptly—don’t get behind!!
Supplements to the text:
This text is accompanied by a CD which contains tutorials and practice problems. We will be using these in class as well as for outside class assignments.
Videos created by the author of this text are available in the Math Lab. They may be checked out as needed.
Syllabus Statement Regarding Calculator Usage
Each student taking this course needs access to a TI-83 or equivalent
graphing/scientific calculator. Students will use their calculator
while participating in class, taking exams, and completing homework
exercises. Please note that sharing calculators during graded
assignments is not permitted
Policies on student conduct and academic integrity are in the College’s “Student Rights & Responsibilities” document. This can be accessed at the following link:

Disabilities Statement
Any student who feels they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should make an appointment with the Access Center to coordinate reasonable accommodations. You are welcome to contact me privately to discuss your specific needs.
This message applies only to students receiving financial aid: Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly. Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each class. Students who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation. If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form.
