Georgia Highlands College campus destroyed

Metal beams, sheets of tin, dead grass, mud holes and tractor-trailer-size bins for storage and waste: no, this is not the local dump; it is the campus of Georgia Highlands College.

The construction crew that is currently putting the new roof on the Walraven building created this mess.

President of Georgia Highlands College, Dr. Randy Pierce, stated that, “Any time you have construction, then obviously they have to bring in equipment, material and everything, and they have to put it somewhere. And it is an inconvenience, and an eyesore.”

Students feel that the construction has made the campus look bad. “It is disgusting,” said Samantha Pierce, a journalism major from Silver Creek.

Al Miller, a business major from Cedartown, said, “Our campus was once one of the most beautiful campuses in the area, but since the construction began, we have large tractors all over, and the grounds don't look good.”

Students may not have to deal with the construction and its effects much longer. Doug Webb, Director of the Physical Plant, said that the project was expected to be finish in March.

The Physical Plant will be responsible for repairing the damage done to the grounds, because no money was budgeted in the contract for the construction company to repair any damages.

Webb also said that the construction workers were within their rights, and that construction workers have to be given “staging areas.” These staging areas are what the students see around the Walraven building.

Webb stated that he is concerned about the appearance of the campus grounds but said it could have been worse had there been more rain. Webb estimates that when the construction is completed in March, it will be some time in April before the repairs to the campus grounds are completed.
