Faculty Guidelines When Unable to Make Class or Clinical

Nursing Program:

All faculty are expected to make arrangements with colleagues to cover class or clinical at a minimum of four hours before the appointed time. It is extremely important to make arrangements for coverage as soon as possible so students (and clinical site, if applicable) can be notified, if necessary. A faculty member is expected to identify an alternate time for making up a clinical day that is missed. It is the faculty member’s responsibility to reschedule the missed clinical day with the students involved. Both full-time and part-time faculty members should report inability to attend class by following through the established chain of command, if necessary. The problem should first be reported to the course coordinator, followed by the Director of Nursing, and finally the Academic Dean.  Additionally, all faculty are expected to report any absence or schedule change to the departmental secretary at the appropriate location.  A faculty member that knows ahead of time that a class or clinical will be missed (jury duty, for example) will follow the same chain of command. Any prospective substitute teachers will be approved in advance by the Coordinator, then the Director of Nursing/Academic Dean.

Dental Hygiene Program:

If a faculty member cannot cover a class or clinical assignment then they are expected to make arrangements with another faculty member to cover class or clinic in as timely a fashion as possible.  If the faculty member is unable to contact another colleague then it is requested that they contact the Director.  All are asked to report these schedule changes to the departmental administrative assistant and Director as soon as possible to eliminate confusion on the part of faculty and students. (This can be accomplished through voicemail, email or cell phones) If the absence cannot be covered by another faculty member then the established student phones trees should be activated to inform students as soon as possible of the changes.  If the absence requires the rescheduling of additional class or clinic time these changes must be run through the Director of Dental Hygiene to avoid scheduling conflicts. Both full-time and part-time faculty members should report inability to attend class/clinic by following through the established chain of command. The problem should first be reported to the course coordinator, followed by the Director of Dental Hygiene who will report to the Academic Dean as needed. A faculty member that knows ahead of time that a class or clinical assignment will be missed (jury duty, for example) will follow the same chain of command. Any prospective substitute teachers will be approved by the Director of Dental Hygiene who will report to the Academic Dean.
