Interlibrary Loan Policy

If someone comes to the desk and says that they cannot find a particular book or journal publication in our collection, it may be necessary to process an Interlibrary Loan Request for them. However, sometimes they just cannot locate the item.

ALWAYS PERFORM A GIL SEARCH TO INSURE THAT THEY HAVE NOT OVERLOOKED THE ITEM IN QUESTION.

We have two kinds of forms kept in a black bin on the Circulation Desk to the left of the Main Circulation Terminal.

  • One form is for periodicals and is entitled “Interlibrary Loan Request- Periodical Article

  • The other form is strictly for books and is entitled “Interlibrary Loan Request-Book”

The student should fill out as much of the form as possible. Then give the form to the Interlibrary Loan Librarian for further processing.

Helpful Tips:

  • When a request is made, it may take anywhere from 5-7 business days before the item requested arrives. Students who need materials right away should be told this to avert misunderstandings. The ILL Process is usually a speedy process but the library can not perform miracles!
  • Occasionally, a lending library may impose a lending fee. Make sure the student making the request understands this up front and answers this part of the form with a simple “Yes” of “No’ response. Lending fees may range from $2.00-$15.00.
  • Articles tend to reach the library much faster than books.
  • Most libraries are willing to lend books that are at least a year old.
  • Someone who wants to read the latest bestseller should be discouraged from using Interlibrary Loan. In this case, they would be better off to visit their nearest bookstore or public library to get on a Waiting List.
  • Most libraries will not loan reference books, rear books, videos, audiotapes, DVDs, etc.
