About D2L

What is D2L?

“D2L” is short for the Desire-2-Learn Learning Environment, Pearson's Learning Management System. Pearson is a well-established Canadian company. It is not connected to the book publisher of the same name.

D2L is a mature and widely used Learning Management System, and numerous US States have recently moved to D2L from Vista. D2L is also used in numerous other countries.

Georgia Highlands will begin using D2L version 9.4.3 beginning in the Spring Semester in January 2013. Blackboard Vista will no longer be used at the College after 2012.

How can I learn to use D2L?

See "Getting Started with D2L" website. 

The site will show you how to log in, and how to get to your courses. There will also be sections on how to use all the basic D2L tools, like reading and sending email, getting to your course content, joining a discussion, submitting an assignment and taking a quiz.

Will D2L help be available?

Yes.  Online support is available for at the Online D2L Help Center at:

Will in-person D2L help available?

Yes, you can go in person to one of the IT Help facilities on the various GHC campuses. The Online Help center also has a link to submit a help ticket or speak to a consultant.

Is D2L accessible?

Yes. 
"Desire2Learn is committed to reporting our web accessibility compliance openly and transparently. We believe that accessibility standards and laws are more than checklists and work with our client-led Accessibility Interest Group to ensure our Section 508 VPATs and WCAG 2.0 checklists are descriptive and accurate."

In the Self-Paced Tutorial, a course offering in D2L, there is a section on accessibility. In this section, you can find samples of accessible pages, style sheets (CSS), and instructions about how to implement these in your course offerings in D2L.

Can I access D2L with a Mobile Browser?

Yes.  You can access D2L from your mobile devices such as an iPad, iPod/iPhone, Droid and Blackberry. Users can post in discussions, but other than that, the mobile site is read-only.  From here you can:

  • See global and course-specific news item
  • View course and course content
  • View course events
  • Participate in course discussions
  • Check grades
  • Create bookmarks to quickly access content later.

What web browser can I use?

You can use Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

Can I use a Mac?

Yes. D2L works on a Mac, PC, or tablet (i.e. an iPad, for example), or a smart phone (iPhone).
