Hybrid ENGL 2122 is designed for those who need flexibility in their schedule, feel comfortable communicating by email, have some experience using the Internet, and are self-motivated. Paired with an 8-week hybrid ENGL 1102 course, this is a great way to complete a 2-class sequence in a single semester. This class meets twice a week for 75 minutes just like a regular course, but instead of completing 3 credit hours in a standard 16 week semester, this course is completed in just 8 weeks. To make this possible, students will complete approximately half the course material as online instruction via GeorgiaVIEW Vista. The online component plus the classroom meetings create a pace that is similar to a summer semester course, but without the lengthened class meetings that occur in summer classes.

Is a hybrid course more work than a traditional course?

Rumors that suggest hybrid courses require more work than traditional courses are incorrect--the material covered and assignments completed are equivilent in both formats. Because hybrid courses have less face-to-face time in the classroom, students will spend more out-of-class time working on a hybrid course. A hybrid course is the best of two worlds: regular access to an instructor like a traditional course AND scheduling flexibility like an online course.  

What is this course about?

English 2122, or British Literature II, presents the English literary tradition as represented by major authors from the Eighteenth Century through the present day. This course will include study of the Victorian novel, modern British films, and  much more.

 What is the work load?

Since this is a 3 hour course, in general, students can expect to spend 6-24 hours a week involved in course work. Like summer classes, this class will have a weekly workload that feels like 2 classes instead of one--this is because the class finishes in half the time. Compare:

 An added benefit of this format is that a student only needs to concentrate on three classes at a time.

 What about the Course Materials and delivery?

This course uses GeogiaView Vista to deliver the syllabus, content modules,  assignments, quizzes, projects, and a discussion area.  The course is setup around modules that guide students through course content, practice exercises/self-assessments, and major assignments. Modules will be made available a week in advance to increase scheduling flexibility. Module work will coordinate with material covered during class meetings.

Mandatory Attendance: 

This class has a face-to-face component, and students are expected to attend class meetings. In addition, students will be expected to check email regularly and log-in to the course page at least 2-3 times each week.

Required Materials:

1. Required Textbooks: The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Vols. D, E, and F, 9th ed., published 2012.
2. Short Novel  (may be borrowed from GHC or local library)--Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or others--students will choose a novel from a list of selections on the first day of class
3. Internet Access—at home or school
4. Microsoft Office 2007/2010 or equivalent*

*If you will be using Microsoft Works, you will need to save files in a .doc, .docx, or .rtf format rather than the program’s default of .wps as this format cannot be opened by any GHC computer. If you will be using Open Office or any other free shareware word processor, you may have to come to campus and use Microsoft Office to complete the formatting of your assignments.

• 2-3 exams (small in-class section, take-home essay questions)
