General Online Course Information
Online FCST 1010 is designed for those who need flexibility in their schedule, feel comfortable communicating by email, have some experience using the Internet and Internet based programs, and are self-motivated. It is a great way to gain this valuable information, working when you have the chance from your own home.
What is the work load?
Since this is a 2 hour course, in general, students can expect to spend 2 to 10 hours a week involved in course work. However, if your computer is at your home, you will save the drive time of going to and from campus twice a week. In addition, there are times when you can complete assignments ahead of the course schedule which may help with your time management and balancing your other responsibilities. As this is an "Activity" course, your grade is solely based on the accumulated points for completed assignments, projects, and discussions. Be prepared to WORK.
The course content will be delivered mainly via the Desire2Learn learning management system. You will complete a course orientation within D2L, then begin the course content. Each week will have you completing quizzes over the course content, participating in class discussions and assignments, and working on a Skills project. The Desire2Learn section is set up to walk you step by step through the entire course. Click the image below for information on accessing your Desire2Learn account. You will find our class listed as "The College Experience Section W2 Spring Semester 2013 CO".
Am I ready for an online class? Will you be successful in this course?
If this is your first online course, I would highly recommend that you take the Readiness for Education At a Distance Indicator (READI) to assess your readiness, your goals, and your learning preferences.
You can find the READI at http://goml.readi.info/
On that page you will find several User Names and Passwords. Select and use the one that best fits your major area of study. When the READI opens, you will notice a navigation bar on the left side. The items listed in the bar are the areas that you will be measured on by the indicator. At the end, a report will be displayed which you can use to help you prepare to be successful as a distance-learning student.
Mandatory Attendance :
There are no mandatory face-to-face requirements for the course. However, since this is an online course, you must correspond with the instructor via email at least once a week. Students who neglect to correspond once per week, will be considered 'absent' and will be required to complete a conference with the chair of the Academic Success & eLearning division, Dr. Diane Langston. She will determine if your absence from the course is merited and will grant or deny permission to continue the course.
