COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Prerequisites:     Satisfactory placement scores/ENGL 0099, READ 0099, MATH0097.

Course Description:     BIOL 1010 constitutes the required core course for a 7-8 semester hour laboratory science sequence. Topics to be covered include the chemical basis of cells, general cell biology and genetics, respiration and photosynthesis, patterns of inheritance, natural selection and speciation, and an introduction to the major kingdoms of life.  The laboratory component provides hands-on experience in analysis and evaluation of biological processes.  This course provides a foundation for the non-science major student in the skills of inquiry, data collection, and critical thinking while introducing the student to the basic concepts of the life sciences.  NOTE:  It serves as a prerequisite to more specific courses designed to complete a science sequence.  Credit for this course is not granted for students having credit in BIOL 2107K or BIOL 2108K.  [Georgia Highlands Catalog 2007-2009].

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Define biology, identify and describe the characteristics of life, and explain the hierarchal organization of life.
  2. Identify and describe the scientific method and its processes.
  3. Identify, describe, and explain the basic principles of chemistry as they relate to the biological sciences.
  4. Define organic chemistry and identify and describe the major classes of organic compounds.
  5. Explain the cell theory, describe basic cell structure, identify major organelles, and describe their functions.
  6. Describe the process of energy transfer in cells as it relates to photosynthesis, cellular respiration and the role of enzymes.
  7. Discuss basic principles of classical genetics including cell reproduction and Mendelian inheritance.
  8. Describe structure and function of genes and DNA and explain the application of molecular genetics to biotechnology.
  9. Define evolution, identify and describe mechanisms of evolution, and will be able to identify the steps leading to the evolution of life on earth.
  10. Operate basic instrumentation, gather data, analyze data, and generate conclusions in a laboratory or observational setting.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Lecture:     Biology: Concepts and Investigations, Hoefnagels, 2012, 2nd ed.  

  • Although the instructor makes power point slides available, they are meant only to be a SUPPLEMENT to the above required texts.  Regularly reading your textbook and lab manual is NECESSARY to facilitate comprehension of the material.

Laboratory:     Inquiry into Biology Laboratory Manual, Mader, 2014, 14th ed.

  • The lab manual is NOT an optional text. Every student must have a copy for the instructor to check upon completion of each lab activity. Each student must have their own lab manual and labs WILL NOT be accepted on notebook paper.

Scantrons:     Tests and exams may be multiple choice and students MUST provide their own Scantron answer forms, which are available at the campus bookstore for a small cost. Scantron forms must be clean, uncreased, and without excess marks to be read properly read by the machine. Running out of forms, using forms that are in poor condition, or marking forms improperly will lead to a student receiving no credit for the corresponding test or exam. The answers marked on the Scantron form are the ones graded. NO CREDIT will be given for answers marked correctly on the examination copy which are marked incorrectly on the Scantron form or for stray marks or poor erasures that cause the Scantron machine to misread the form. For these reasons it is the responsibility of the students and they are encouraged to be prepared with several forms and efficient eraser(s) at every test or exam.

LECTURE GRADE CALCULATION:

The lecture grade is based on daily assessment exercises, 4 regular lecture exams with the highest grade replacing your lowest, and 1 final exam.

Lecture Exams:     each exam may include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, short answer, or essay questions. The first 4 exams will be worth 100 pts and cover only the material since the previous exam. The final exam is worth 200 points covering the entire semester (cumulative).

Daily Assessments:     brief assessments in the form of quizzes or homework assignments will be assigned regularly. The quizzes may be given at the start or end of class and are only available if the student is present. Most homework assignments can be obtained from the instructor’s web page, D2L, and/or they will be distributed in class. It is the responsibility of the student to check the web page/D2L daily for any assignments or announcements from the instructor in the event of an absence. Assignments are due at the start of class and 50% of the associated points will be lost for any turned in after that. Late assignments will only be accepted for a week after the due date.

LAB GRADE CALCULATION:

The laboratory grade is based on participation and completion of 6 lab exercise grades, 6 lab quizzes, and a lab final. Before the lab grade is generated, the lowest daily lab exercise grade and lab quiz will be dropped.

Daily Lab Exercises:    each laboratory exercise requires documentation of data, graphing of data, analysis of data, or completion of relevant questions to be answered. Points are for the student physically being in the lab and actively completing the assignment (not copying from lab partners) and can’t be made up in the case of an absence. They are due at the end of class and must be initialed by the lab instructor, unless otherwise instructed, to receive full credit. Points will be deducted for failure to get the exercise signed.

Lab Quizzes:     It is necessary that you have read and are familiar with each lab exercise prior to coming to class. Because of this, each lab quiz will be cover material concerning the current week’s lab exercise. No make-ups are allowed for missed quizzes.

Lab Station Statement:  Lab stations will be assigned during the first week of lab.  It is the student’s responsibility to maintain a clean and organized lab station.  Failure to return lab material and equipment to the proper location will result in reduction in participation points to be determined by your instructor.  This includes the cleanliness of glassware and proper storage of lab supplies.

LAB STATEMENT:

Since this course involves a laboratory component, there are specific safety issues that students need to be aware of (such as use of lab coats and or safety/goggles, or any other such example specifically related to that course).  It is the student's responsibility to be aware of all such issues and act in an extremely cautious manner to avoid any potential causes for accidents in the laboratory.  GHC is not liable for any accident in the lab due to the negligence on the part of any individual.

GRADING  SCALE:

The letter grade for the course will be determined from the following scale (based on percentage of points earned): 

A = 100 – 90%; B = 89 – 80%; C = 79 – 70%; D = 69 – 60%; F = 59% and below

Notice: If a student's final average is within one half a point (ex: 89.5) of the next letter grade the instructor will grant rounding up to the next letter grade if the student has not missed more than 2 classes for any reason.

EARLY WARNING PROGRAM:

Georgia Highlands College requires that all faculty members report their student’s progress throughout the course of the semester as part of the institution-wide Early Warning Program (EWP). In accordance with EWP, faculty members provide the Registrar’s Office with academic reports of each student enrolled in their courses(s) at checkpoints staggered throughout the semester. The following success factors are reported at their corresponding checkpoint:

Week 1: Notification of non-attendance (August 22nd, 2013)
Week 3: Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory Progress (September 9th, 2013)

EARLY GRADES STATEMENT:

GHC offers a variety of part-of-term classes to allow students to have flexible schedules. However, there are only three semesters each year; Spring, Summer, and Fall. It is only at the end of each semester that grades are rolled to academic history and available on the official transcript. After each part-of-term, as soon as instructors have entered grades, they may be viewed online by logging into SCORE (https://discovery.highlands.edu:9986/pls/SCORE/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin). Transcripts may also be requested at any time by logging into SCORE. Prior to the end of term, should a student need an early grade letter sent to another institution they may complete the request form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office for processing (http://www.highlands.edu/site/registrar-forms). ATTENDANCE POLICY:          

Lecture:  In any biological science course, there is a direct correlation between classroom attendance and academic performance. Attendance will be recorded for advisory purposes and administrative record keeping. You will be given an individual page to sign each date you attend. Additionally, this course is an 8 – week course, but we will cover the same amount of material as the 16 – week course, therefore missed classes are not in the student’s best interest due to the large amount of information that will be missed. It is the student’s SOLE responsibility for obtaining all material, including handouts that were missed as a result of an absence; excused or unexcused.

Lab:     Weekly attendance to the laboratory is required.  Failure to attend laboratory during your normally scheduled lab time will result in a loss of points associated with that particular lab.  Due to the nature of the typical lab setting, there will be no make-up opportunities to earn lab points lost due to failure to attend. Attending another lab section is ONLY allowed with the lab instructor’s permission.

Extended Absence Policy:     Students, who have circumstances that prevent them from continuing to attend classes over an extended period of time, sometimes request that the faculty member permit them to submit work in absentia to receive credit to complete the course. If the concurrent absences will constitute more than 15% (5) of the class sessions for the term, then written permission from the Division Chair is required before any course assignments can be completed while missing class.  The student must be in good academic standing in the course to make the request.  All approved coursework must be completed by the end of the semester in which the course was begun.  (Note: If a program has a more stringent absence policy than this, then the program policy prevails.)

MAKEUP POLICY:

NO make ups are given for any reason. There are dropped and replaced grades built into the course so that in the case of an absence a single missed exam, quiz, or other assignment does not result in a zero. There are absolutely no exceptions to this.

FINANCIAL AID STATEMENT

This message applies only to students receiving financial aid: Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly.  Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each classStudents who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation.  If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student's financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form".

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY:

If there is inclement weather, the college posts necessary announcements on the highlands.edu web site.  Cancellation notices will be reported to the local radio stations and WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

STUDENT CONDUCT AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICIES:

Policies on student conduct and academic integrity are In the College’s “Student Rights & Responsibilities” document. This can be accessed at http://www.highlands.edu/subwebs/academicaffairs/academicintegritypolicy.htm.

In regards to exams and assignments, any evidence of violating the Academic Integrity Policies will result in an automatic zero for that exam or assignment and possible further disciplinary action which may include failure of the course. Examples of violations include:

  • Possession of a copy of an exam or possession of questions and/or answers from any exam
  • Collaborating during an exam or assignment unless explicitly permitted.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

In order to withdraw, a course withdrawal form or a complete withdrawal form must be obtained from the Admissions and Records Office, filled out by the student, and signed by the instructor (for course withdrawal) or Admissions (for complete withdrawal).  If this paperwork is not done, then you are still considered enrolled in the course and will get an F even if you don’t participate at all.  Do not expect a grade change from F to W once it is on the permanent transcript (following the close of the semester).

Any withdrawals after mid-semester will result in WF unless the Academic Vice-President’s office gives approval for a hardship non-punitive withdrawal.  Such a decision is made cooperatively between the Academic Vice-President’s Office and the instructor.  Having a less-than-desirable grade average is not reason enough for a hardship case.  Make a decision based on grade before mid-semester. In such a case, inform the instructor of the hardship situation, and then inform the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs (Rome Campus).  With appropriate documentation, the VP will send a letter of permission to the instructor to allow a non-punitive withdrawal.

In any withdrawal, forms are available at the Help Desk.  It is also important that you check with the Financial Aid Office to see how your withdrawal might impact any financial aid.

DISABILITY STATEMENT:
