Mission and Expected Outcomes of Academic Advising

Academic Advising:† Mission Statement

In support of the Georgia Highlands College Mission and Goals, academic advising is a joint venture between the student and a faculty or professional advisor.† Advisors help students explore and determine the best educational options to achieve their personal and professional goals, whether within the core curriculum, transfer programs, or career programs.† Academic advising is available to all students and is seen as a learning opportunity.† Advisors assist students in:

  • Setting realistic educational goals
  • Learning and applying decision-making strategies, and
  • Making appropriate choices.

Expected Outcomes for Academic Advising

  • New students will learn about academic requirements.
  • Students will be aware of institutional resources available to meet their individual educational needs and aspirations.
  • Currently enrolled students will interact with an advisor prior to registration.
  • Students will plan a program of study tailored to their academic talents and professional interests.
  • Students will understand the importance of strategic planning for coursework to be undertaken.

Responsibilities of Academic Advisors

  • Respect the studentís right to privacy of educational records (FERPA).
  • Be accessible to students (This includes maintaining regular office hours).
  • Strengthen advising skills by regularly participating in training activities.
  • Be familiar with institutional regulations and academic policies and procedures and communicate these to students.
  • Offer advice on course selection (New Student Orientation process).
  • Assist with the development of an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements (Early Bird Advising process).
  • Assist with goal-setting, both short-term and long term, that are consistent with studentís abilities and interests (This includes course load and factors such as academic background, program demands, employment or personal commitments).
  • Discuss academic performance and the implications of poor academic performance.
  • Make referrals to appropriate resources as needed (This includes Tutorial Services, Financial Aid, and Counseling & Career Services).

Responsibilities of Students

  • Accept final responsibility for all decisions.
  • Know and comply with the academic policies and procedures of the College.
  • Ask questions!† If you do not understand a policy or procedure, ask questions until you do.
  • Be aware of academic performance standards and GPA requirements.
  • Regularly check GHC email account.
  • Observe academic deadlines.† Know when to register and when to drop/add classes.
  • Notify GHC if address or phone number changes.
  • Participate fully in the courses for which you are registered by completing assignments on time and attending class.
  • Organize official College documents so that they are easily accessible to you.
