Guiding Principles for Hiring and Assigning Courses to Part-Time Instructors who are Non-TRS Retirees

A non-TRS retiree is anyone who is not retired or a person who retired under a different retirement system other than the Teacher Retirement System (TRS).

Principles:

1)      All assignments to part-time faculty are on an as needed basis and are subject to change up to the end of the drop/add period for each semester.

2)      The college will not hire current full-time employees at other University System institutions to work as a part-time instructor at Georgia Highlands College unless there are extenuating circumstances. These special cases must be presented to the VPAA for approval before hiring.

3)      It is the responsibility of the part-time instructor to notify Georgia Highlands College of all current instructing assignments, especially those at other USG institutions. This must be taken into account as the academic dean determines the workload at Georgia Highlands College for the instructor.

4)      A part-time instructor who is a non-TRS retiree may teach a maximum of eight (8) credit hours in the Fall and eight (8) credit hours during Spring semester. During Summer semester, a part-time instructor could teach a maximum of eight (8) credit hours. Any requests to exceed this number of credit hours must be presented to the VPAA before the assignment is finalized.
