GHC/Marietta Hosts Cobb County Job Shadow Day
Georgia Highlands College/Marietta, in partnership with Junior Achievement and Cobb Chamber of Commerce, will host Cobb County Job Shadow Day for a group of 30 middle-school students from Lovinggood Middle School on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at GHC. GHC is located on the campus of Southern Polytechnic State University.
The program is designed for students to discover and explore the career possibilities awaiting them while developing the critical link between the skills they are learning and the importance of this knowledge to career success. The middle-school students, who will be paired up with current Georgia Highlands College students, will take a tour of the campus and participate in political intrigue and psychological exercises. Students will also be able to ask their GHC student leaders questions about the challenges and benefits of their college experiences.
Nancy Kelly, student services specialist, will spearhead the event. She said, "This is an excellent opportunity for GHC students to make a difference in the lives of Lovinggood students." Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, site director of GHC/Marietta added, "We are delighted to become a partner with the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, and Cobb County School District to pursue higher levels of civic engagement. This project is a win/win situation for all. Middle-school children, some of whom may be at risk for dropping out of high school, will be able to receive a first-hand look at the rewards of a college education. And our Highlands students will have the benefit of serving their community while making a lasting impression on a future generation."
