GHC/Marietta Lends a Helping Hand to Center for Family Resources

Georgia Highlands College/Marietta, delivered more than 200 cans of food to the Cobb Civic Center in Marietta just before the Thanksgiving holiday as part of a service learning project for students, faculty and staff. The cans were collected for the annual Can-A-Thon drive at the college. Each of the six GHC sites competed against each other to raise the highest percentage of cans per person, with GHC/Marietta winning first place.

Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, site director of GHC/Marietta, said "We know that the need at food pantries around the area has risen steeply during this recession, and we wanted to help them provide for families who are struggling. The number of faculty, staff and students who joined together to make this happen demonstrates the GHC community's commitment to our service area and the needs of our fellow citizens."

Meredith Ginn, assistant professor of communication and organizer of the project, said, "Encouraging our students to become responsible and caring citizens is something we try to emphasize at Georgia Highlands. I was moved to see how much our college family cares about our local community and how generous we can be, even in the face of furloughs and budget cuts."

The Center for Family Resources, in partnership with the Cobb County Department of Family and Children Services, has been providing Thanksgiving baskets to families in need in Cobb County for more than 20 years. In 2008, CFR provided Thanksgiving baskets to 1,370 families. CFR has seen a 49% increase in need during the first half of 2009 compared to 2008 and has set a goal to provide baskets to 1,500 families. CFR is working to preserve family traditions and treasured time together by providing everything each family needs to enjoy their holiday.
