Continuing with the themes of citizenship, community, and contribution established in The Citizen Project, the Success in Leadership project asks you to identify a citizen leader who has made a difference in their community.  Use your issue from The Citizen Project as a starting point.  Begin by identifying someone working with your issue, who is leading the way for others to come behind and create a movement.  Your leader does not have to be a head of state or possess fame.  You may identify leadership qualities in someone working at the organization where you completed your service hours.  You will complete this project through a series of multimedia exercises and writings.  Each student will be asked to create Prezi presentation, which is a new presentation technology tool that previous FCST 1010 students have found to be an exciting alternative to Power Point.  Your project will be uploaded to your eFolioWorld page, 'Success in Leadership'.

*** Calendar for 3 credit hour pilot version of this course may be different from that listed above. ***

STEP 1 :  WHAT MAKES A LEADER?

To begin this project, you will write a paragraph stating your thoughts about what makes someone a leader.  Think about what characteristics that person must possess and how they can impact others through their thoughts, words, and actions.  The following videos will help to get your ideas rolling.

Top 10 Characteristics of a Leader:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=silPtekoFqE&feature=related

Complete Step 1 by creating an eFolioWorld BASIC CONTENT file.  Give your paragraph the title "What Makes a Leader?".  Type at least three sentences conveying your thoughts on leadership.  Post this text on the eFolioWorld page, "Success In Leadership".  (20 Points)

STEP 2 :  CHOOSE YOUR LEADER

There are many valuable resources maintained by our GHC libraries that can help you identify key, citizen leaders working with your issue.  Identify one citizen leader.  The leader you choose may be a locally, nationally, or globally recognized individual.  Perhaps, you met this person while completing your service learning hours, and they are not formally "recognized" , but YOU recoginized their leadership.  Think outside of the box!!  The only restrictions are that your leader cannot be a family member or classmate.  The following resources may help narrow your search.

Step 2 is completed by sending a leader choice paragraph via GHC Email to your instructor.  Include the answers to the following questions in your Email. (10 Points)

  • How does this individual fit into your Citizen Project?
  • Why did you choose this particular person above any others involved with your TCP issue?
  • How did you find your chosen leader?

STEP 3 :  SUCCESS IN LEADERSHIP PREZI

Are you tired of creating the same old Power Point presentations?  There is now an amazing alternative that is completely FREE.  During this step you will learn how to use this cool, new tech tool while readying your citizen leader information for your final presentation.

What is Prezi?   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxhqD0hNx4Q

Getting Started in Prezi (Teacher/Student)

PREZI - Write and Insert Functions

PREZI - Frames, Paths, and Embedding into eFolioWorld

Please, refrain from making this project a biography of the person's life.  It might be appropriate to give a brief history of the person's background, if that experience contributed to the leadership qualities you highlight.  However, this project is meant for you to showcase their current work, how they are making a difference in their field, and the leadership qualities you see in them.  To complete Step 3, you will create a Prezi according to the project requirments listed below, and embed the HTML file onto your 'Success In Leadership' eFolioWorld page. (100 Points)

  • 10 Text Frames with in-text citations.  You will use text frames to tell your citizen leader's story.  Once again, your presentation should address the following: (5 Points per frame to total 50 points)
    • Meaningful background information that contributed to their passion for their cause.
    • Current work they are engaged in.
    • How have they made a difference through their work?
    • What are the qualities of leadership you see in them?
    • Why did you choose to present this person as a leader?
  • 10 MEANINGFUL images to help convey your leader's story. Remember, a picture is worth 1000 words! (5 points per image to total 50 points)

Citing Images:

To cite an image (graphic, picture, map, photo), you can use the following format from Classroom Connect:

Description or title of image. [Online image] Available http://address/filename, Date.

Example of a final citation (color-coded):

Two beluga whales. [Online image] Available http://www.seaworld.org/beluga_whales/beluga_col.gif, January 5, 2000.

  • It is acceptible, BUT NOT REQUIRED, to embellish your presentation with YouTube Video clips.  Please, limit clips to 30 seconds.

EMBED YOUR PREZI ONTO YOUR 'SUCCESS IN LEADERSHIP' EFOLIOWORLD PAGE.

STEP 4 :  WORKS CITED

Of course you must include a works cited page!  It is important that your audience member can locate the sources for your information, images, and videos.  Use the same techniques you learned from The Citizen Project to create and upload a Works Cited page for your Success In Leadership project.

VIDEO:  HOW TO USE EASYBIB TO GENERATE MLA WORKS CITED PAGE

  • Click the link above to access the EasyBib online bibliography maker.
    • Use EasyBib to construct a preliminary Works Cited page.  Your works cited should contain AT LEAST 3 sources.  Source requirements are as follows.
    • Sources can be any of the following types; website, personal interview, journal, newspaper, newscast, magazine, podcast, or documentary.
  • To complete Step 4, post your  MLA Works Cited page in either sidebar of your eFolioWorld page, 'Success In Leadership' (20 Points)

STEP 5 :  REFLECTIONS ON LEADERSHIP

Step 5 is completed by writing a reflection paragraph on 'leadership' and posting it to your  eFolioWorld page 'Succes In Leadership' (20 Points)

Create a BASIC content file containing your ideas on the prompts below. Title your file "Reflections on Leadership". DO NOT COPY AND PASTE THE PROMPTS INTO YOUR FILE.  YOU NEED TO WRITE A PARAGRAPH ADDRESSING THE PROMPTS, BUT IT SHOULD BE IN NARRATIVE FORMAT.

  • What does it mean to be a leader?
  • What are the most important characteristics a leader should posses?
  • According to the "Lessons from a Dancing Guy", it is more important to be a 'First Follower' than a 'Leader'.  Do you agree or disagree with this opinion, and why?
  • Did completing the 'Success In Leadership' project shape your ideas of leadership?  Why or why not?

STEP 6 :  DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS

Many of the same qualities that contribute to effective leadership are the same for being a successful student.  Develop ONE of your skills for success further by completing any of the Online Skillshops. You may choose any of the skillshops, except for  "The 21st Century Researcher", which was a requirment for The Citizen Project.  All other Skillshops are fair game!

ONLINE SUCCESS SKILLSHOP:  http://highlands.edu/site/faculty-lgore-success-skills-shop

  • Click the link above to complete ONE of the online skillshops - YOU ONLY HAVE TO DO ONE! :D
  • Complete Step 6 by posting your 'Deliverables'  to your First Year Portfolio eFolioWorld page,  'GROWTH'. (20 Points)

STEP 7 :  DID YOU CHANGE?

Many aspects of success in college have been addressed this semester.  We have discussed topics ranging from time management to diversity.  As humans, we undergo constant changes in our thoughts, ideas, and lives.  As we end this semester, you are asked to take one more look at how you may have changed over the time you have engaged with this course material.  Step 7 asks you to complete the following survey and compare to your answers at the beginning of the semester, through a brief reflection on your changes.

  • Reflection on Change (5 Points)

After seeing the results of your CSFI 2.0 Post-Survey and comparing them to your Pre-survey, write a brief relfection paragraph.  To do so, create a BASIC content file in eFolioWorld.  Title your file Reflections on Change.  Type a few sentences about how you have changed this semester, and what you will take forward from this class into your future college courses. This reflection is a great way for you to document the positive changes you have made, so that you can revisit them when you need the encouragement.   Post to First Year Portfolio eFolioWorld page 'GROWTH'.
