eFolioWorld assignment 2 will guide you through the processes of research and Service Learning. Service Learning at Georgia Highlands College is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, promote academic excellence, and teach civic responsibility while serving genuine community needs.  The FCST 1010 Service Learning project, THE CITIZEN PROJECT, has you connecting with an organization in your community, who works with a socio-political issue that you, personally, care about.  Over the first eight weeks of the semester, you will identify an issue of interest from your community, establish contact with a non-profit organization where you can volunteer for 10 hours of service, research your issue and organization, and finally share your experiences with the world by posting them to your eFolioWorld electronic portfolio.  Each of your intructors are working on their own projects and portfolios, which should serve as an example for you.

STEP 1 :  WILL YOU CHANGE?

Since this project will have you researching and making a difference with an importnant social issue that you personally care about, you may experenience changes this semester;  changes in your ideas, changes in your values, and changes in your actions.  It may be interesting and helpful for you to note your growth throughout this semester. Through the use of surveys and reflections, we will help you identify any of those changes that may occur.  It will be up to you continue your actions and truly make a difference in our world.

STEP 2 :  CHOOSE YOUR ISSUE

The Citzen Project was designed so with your interest in mind.  your will choose a sociopolitical issue that has affected you and your community. Make sure that you choose an issue that interests you and has a local organization that addresses this issue.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE A TOPIC LISTED BELOW.

  • Prescription Drug Abuse - The Mercy House

  • Domestic Violence - Caminar Latino
  • Breastfeeding Awareness - La Leche League

Each of these topics were chosen for the impact it makes on the communities we live and work in.  The possibilites are endless!!  What affects your community?  In this election year, you might even choose to work with an awareness or political campaign.  It is all about making a difference! 

Begin by surveying a few databases or website for issue.  Below are a few sources that may be a good starting point.  This is YOUR project, so make sure you care about the topic you choose.

Complete Step 2 by sending a statement to your instructor on the issue your research will address, this semester.  Send a paragraph via GHC Email, answering the following questions(10 Points)

  • Why have you chosen this issue? 
  • How have you seen this issue evident in your own community? 
  • Why should everyone care about this issue?

STEP 3 :  IDENTIFY YOUR SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

For The Citizen Project, you will be required to complete 10 service hours with a local organization.  You should choose the organization you work with based on their committment to the particular sociopolitical issue you have chosen.  You may work off-campus or on-campus, but will need to make sure you can complete 10 hours of service in the given timefrme.  You can begin with the links to the lists, below.  If you find nothing you can use, ask your instructor for help.  You may also want to contact GHC's Service Learning Coordinator, Juliana Breithaupt at jbreitha@highlands.edu .  Most importantly, you should have exhausted all of your avenues for inquiry, before contacting your instructor or Mrs. Breithaupt.

When you make initial contact with the organization, make sure to explain our project and verify that they have a sufficient opportunity for you to serve.  Do not forget to check any preliminary requirements to work with the organizatoin (background check, etc.)  Above and byond all, remember you are representing GHC in our community.  Leave our community partners with a positive impression of you and GHC.

Step 3 is completed by sending a service intentions paragraph via GHC Email to your instructor.  Include the answers to the following questions in your Email. (5 Points) 

  • How does this service organization work with the issue you have chosen to research? 
  • What type of service will you be performing for this organization?

You will also need to complete and submit to yur instructor the GHC Waiver, Release, and Hold Harmless Agreement BEFORE YOU COMPLETE ANY SERVICE WITH AN ORGNIZATION. (5 Points)

STEP 4 :  CONDUCT YOUR RESEARCH

Before you begin researching your issue and organization, we want to make sure that you are well equipped with the necessary tools.  You will need to complete the Online Success Skillshop module, the 21st Century Researcher, and post a preliminary works cited page.  Your instructor will review your sources and give you feedback on the source choices you have made. You will be researching both the issue you have chosen, as wel as the service organization you will be working with.  Please, keep this in mind when you are conducting your research.  For specifics on what will be required in your research summary click here:  Create Your Summary

  • Click the link above to access the EasyBib online bibliography maker.
    • Use EasyBib to construct a preliminary Works Cited page.  Your works cited should contain AT LEAST 3 sources.  Source requirements are as follows.
    • 1 website, 2 – choose from the following types {journal, newspaper, newscast, magazine, podcast, or documentary}

STEP 5 :  COMPLETE YOUR SERVICE

We want you to put your passion and research into action.  The Citizen Project requires 10 Service Learning hours at your partnering organization.  To receive credit for the service you complete, it is required that you track all service hours with the following form.  A valid coordinator signature is required to receive credit for your service hours.

Submit a hard copy of service hours verification form to instructor. (10 points per hour of service to total 100 Points)

 

STEP 6 : PLAN YOUR TCP PAGE

 

Planning is a critical step in the process of research.  Step 7 will have you creating a summary of your research through text, images, links, and any other media you may choose to include.  Use Step 6 to organize your thoughts and determine what information you would like to include.  Mind mapping, or concept mapping, is an excellent way to visually layout your ideas.  To create a mindmap, you're going to be using a tool called Text2Mindmap (www.text2mindmap.com). Watch the video below for tips on mapping a research paper.

To complete Step 6, create a concept map of your ideas using Text2MindMap.  Upload a JPG image of your mind map and post it to your eFolioWorld page, 'The Citizen Project'. (20 Points)

 

STEP 7 :  CREATE YOUR SUMMARY

          

It is now time to build your eFolioWorld page for the research you have conducted.  Take this opportunity to showcase your issue, the organization you worked with, and your experience with serving in this manner.  Challenge yourself to be creative and professional.  Make sure your text is cited properly.  You can reference the videos below on citations, plagiarism, and paraphrasing.  All text, images, URL's, videos, sound files, etc. shuld be loaded onto 'The Citizen Project' eFolioWorld page.  Arrange these components in a manner that is visually pleasing and gets your message across.

3  Cited Images (5 points each to total 15 pionts)

Your images should be meaningful and convey the spirit of the project.  Type image citations into the 'FULL TEXT' box in the eFolioWorld Image file.  It will show up as a caption on the image.

INSERT URL CREATING VIDEO

5 paragraphs of text including IN-TEXT CITATIONS.  Paragraphs should be typed into 5 seperate BASIC CONTENT files within eFolioWorld.  This will allow for you to intermingle any images, video clips, sounds files, links, etc. between your text paragraphs.  Breaking up large amounts of text with other media will help keep your audience interested and engaged in your page.  DO NOT USE THE QUESTIONS LISTED BELOW TO TITLE EACH OF YOUR PARAGRAPHS.  YOU WILL NEED TO TITLE EACH PARAGRAPH TO CONVEY THE MAIN IDEA CONTAINED WITHIN THAT TEXT BLOCK.  USE THE QUESTIONS BELOW AS A GUIDE OF WHAT TYPE OF INFORMATION TO INCLUDE IN EACH PARAGRAPH.  (10 Points per paragraph to total 50 points)

  • What is the issue you are addressing in your research?
  • Why is this issue and your research important for everyone to know about?
  • What organization did you choose to complete your service with and how is it related to your issue?
  • What current work is this organization engaged in to address the issue?
  • How did your service with this organization shape your view of the issue?

STEP 8 :  DID YOU CHANGE?

This is your chance to note if you have changed throughout this project.  You will complete the post- version of the Service Learning survey to compare with your early semester results.  Finally, you are asked to analyze your experiences throughout The Citizen Project.  Have these experiences changed your ideas about contributing to your community and the idea of what it means to be a citizen?

My Reflections on Service asks you to analyze any changes you may have had occur throughout this semester.  Begin this assignment by reading your "Citizenship, Community, and Contribution" essay. Now, consider your experiences with The Citizen Project.  Write three paragraphs reflecting on how your ideas about citizenship, community, and contribution may have evolved through your service this semester.

Follow the steps listed below to complete your FINAL REFLECTION.

Under NEW CONTENT, create a BASIC content file, responding to the prompt above for each of the areas listed.

After you have created these basic contents in eFolioWorld, you can drag and drop them from the MY CONTENT tab onto your FIRST YEAR PORTFOLIO "Service" page, beneath your orginal essay link.
