Grants

Georgia Highlands College offers two grants in accordance with the Federal rules and regulations set forthe by the Federal Office of Student Aid.  These grants are the Pell grant and Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant or FSEOG. Under most circumstances these grants do not have to be paid back. Grant eligibility is determined by financial need.

Financial need is determined by the U.S. Department of Education using a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the financial information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to determine the family EFC. The fundamental elements in this standard formula are the student's income (and assets if the student is independent), the parents' income and assets (if the student is dependent), the family's household size, and the number of family members (excluding parents) attending postsecondary institutions. The EFC is the sum of: (1) a percentage of net income (remaining income after subtracting allowances for basic living expenses and taxes) and (2) a percentage of net assets (assets remaining after subtracting an asset protection allowance). Different assessment rates and allowances are used for dependent students, independent students without dependents, and independent students with dependents. After filing a FAFSA, the student receives a Student Aid Report (SAR), or the institution receives an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR), which notifies the student if he or she is eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and provides the student's EFC.

Pell Grant

The Pell grant amounts are dependent on: the students expected family contribution (EFC); the cost of attendance; the student's enrollment status (number of credit hours enrolled in); and whether the student attends for a full academic year or less. Students may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from more than one school at a time.

The maximum Pell grant for the 2013-2014 award year (July 1, 2013 to June 30,2014) is $5645. For the 2013-2014 school year there is not a separate allotment of Pell funds for the Summer semester.  You will only have Pell funds available for Summer semester if you did not attend full time during both Fall and Spring semesters.

As stated above the amount of Pell funds you are eligible for is partially determined by your enrollment status.  If you are enrolled for 12 credit hours or more you will receive the full amount of funds listed on the award page in your SCORE account for that semester.  If you are enrolled for 9-11 credit hours you will receive 75% of the amount listed on your award page, 6-8 credit hours equals 50% of your awarded amount, and 1-5 credit hours equals 25% of your awarded amount.  At GHC, we have classes that are 2, 3, amd 4 credit hours.  When registering for classes, be aware of how many credit hours you are registering for not just how many classes.

FSEOG

A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. FSEOG does not have to be paid back. These funds are awarded to Pell Grant recipients with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC) . Because FSEOG funds are limited, it is vital that you complete your FAFSA as soon as possible. FSEOG is awarded to Pell Grant recipients on a first-come basis.
