Nursing Major Advising: Several Things to Consider
If you are a student who wishes to be successful in completing the prerequisites for the nursing program as well as applying and gaining entrance into the program, then the following should be considered:
-
What is your vision of what it takes to be competitive and successful?
-
What is your perspective of what it takes to gain entrance into an allied health program?
-
Have you read the college catalog?
-
What are you willing to do or what life changes are you willing to make in order to be successful?
-
NOTE: A MINIMUM cumulative GPA of 2.5 in the required general academic courses and a grade of C or better are required in BIOL 2121, BIOL 2122, BIOL 2161, ENGL 1101 and Math 1001 or 1111. Most students who gain entrance into the nursing program have grades of B or higher and GPA of 3.0 or higher.
-
Do you know your GPA? How does it compare to the minimum?
-
-
Taking a math and a science course simultaneously?
-
When was the last time you took both a math and science simultaneously? If so, then how successful were you? If not, then how successful do you think you will be?
-
How well do you think the average college student does taking both courses simultaneously?
-
How much time and preparation do you think it takes to be successful in both courses?
-
-
Taking courses over - Did you know that...
-
Human Anatomy and Physiology courses cannot be older than 6 years at the time of applying for the program and if they are, then they must be retaken
-
If a student repeats a course, then both or all attempts are counted
-
Repeating a course negatively affects your admission score! Click on the links on the left handside to see the nursing application worksheets and how attempts and grades matter!
-
-
Full time versus part time status?
-
-
Have you ever been a full time college student?
-
If so, how successful were you?
-
If not, what do you think is required for a full time student to be successful? i.e., how much time and effort does it take outside the class in order to be successful?
-
Is it possible to work 25-40 hours a week while taking a full semester's worth of college classes? Have you ever done this? If so, how successful were you?
-
-
-
Entrance exams – SAT and TEAS are REQUIRED
-
Have you taken either or both exams?
-
If so, how well did you do?
-
If not, how well do you think you would do?
-
If you scored under the required minimum, what strategies will you employ to close the gap?
-
NOTICE: if you cannot score a minimum of 830 on the SAT you are not eligible for entrance into the nursing program
-
Information on both exams:

Taking into consideration all of the above…
-
What now?
-
What is your overall plan?
-
Who is your advisor?
