MATH0097 Beginning Algebra CRN 20046

Paulding Campus- Spring 2013

Monday-Wednesday 2:00 to 3:50pm  Room 308

Office and Hours:  Paulding Campus Rm 407, MW 11AM-Noon, TR Noon-2PM, TR 4-6PM. 

 

Textbook: Introductory & Intermediate Algebra for College Students, 4/E by Robert F. Blitzer. You may use either the MyMathLab version or the hardback Textbook or both.

 

Calculator: Required every class meeting. It doesn’t have to be a TI-83. It needs to be able to compute with fractions. I will assist in helping you learn to use your calculator before and after class, not during.

 

D2L: I will post your class progress and assignments on D2L.  In case of class cancellations, your assignment will be posted on D2L.

 

Grading: We will have 6 Tests this semester. Test 6 is the Final Exam. Your course average will be based on the average of the HIGHEST FIVE TEST SCOREs out of the SIX in-class tests rounded to the nearest unit.  Your final grade will be determined as follows:  90-100 average, “A”; 80-89 average, “B”; 70-79 average, “C”.

 

Make-Up Policy: No test or in-class graded assignment can be made up. No homework assignment can be turned in after the due date. In extreme, documentable circumstances, evidence can be presented that may override this policy.

 

Cell Phone Policy: No cell phone use is allowed in the classroom during class time. Occasionally, if you must return a text or take a call, please leave the room to do so. If this becomes a common activity, I will document this activity as a class disturbance and turn the matter over to the student discipline process. Your cell phone cannot be used as your calculator.

 

Respect for Students in Class: In order to respect the students in this class and create an appropriate classroom atmosphere, I request that you DO NOT carry on conversations during lecture or test times. On the first occurrence of this behavior, I will make a polite request to stop. If the behavior continues, I will document the behavior and turn the matter over to the student discipline process.

 

 

 

Material Covered for Each Test:

 

At a minimum you should work the Practice Problems at the end of each section.

 

All tests after test 1 will have problems from the previous tests as bonus questions.

 

Wednesday, January 16, Test 1: Chapter 1:1,2,3,5,6,7,8. We will focus on Order of Operations, Like Terms, and translating algebraic expressions.

 

Wednesday, February 6: Test 2: Chapter 2: 1, 2, 3, 4. We will focus on solving degree-1 single-variable equations, evaluating formulas, and understanding percent.

 

Wednesday, February 27: Test 3: Chapter 2: 5, 6, 7 and Chapter 3: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We will focus on solving single-variable degree-1 inequalities and graphing in two variables.

 

Wednesday, March 27: Test 4: Chapter 5: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We will focus on order of operations with algebraic expressions, exponents, and scientific notation.

 

Wednesday, April 24:  Test 5: Chapter 6: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. We will focus on factoring and solving quadratic equations using factoring.

 

Wednesday May 1: Test 6: Cumulative Final Exam.

 

COMMON SYLLABUS ITEMS

TUTORIAL CENTER: A Tutorial Center is available on the Rome, Cartersville,  Paulding, and Marietta Campuses. Hours vary on each campus. These centers provide wonderful assistance and should be used when possible to supplement your classroom experience.

EXTENDED ABSENCE POLICY:  Students, who have circumstances that prevent them from continuing to attend classes over an extended period of time, sometimes request that the faculty member permit them to submit work in absentia to receive credit to complete the course. If the concurrent absences will constitute more than 15% of the class sessions for the term, then written permission from the Division Chair is required before any course assignments can be completed while missing class.  The student must be in good academic standing in the course to make the request.  All approved coursework must be completed by the end of the semester in which the course was begun.”

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: Any student who feels he/she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should make an appointment with the College Access Center (706-802-5003) to coordinate reasonable accomodations. You are welcome to contact me privately to discuss your specific needs.

 

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:  The last day to withdraw without penalty is March 18, 2013. You are responsible for seeing that the withdrawal procedure is followed –remember you must drop credit classes if you drop a LS class.

 

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY:  If there is inclement weather, the college posts necessary announcements on the highlands.edu web site.  Cancellation notices for locations will be reported to radio stations and WXIA-TV in Atlanta.  However, please be advised that station regulations may not allow for clarity in location-specific announcements such as “Georgia Highlands, Cartersville only.”  Generally speaking, stations simply broadcast something like “Georgia Highlands is closed.”

This message applies only to students receiving financial aid:  Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly.  Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each classStudents who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation.  If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form.
