GENERAL COURSE REGULATIONS AND POLICIES

  1. All students are responsible for knowing the syllabus and these regulations. I will NOT answer questions concerning either and if asked; I will direct you to reference them.

  2. This is a college course and all students are expected to conduct themselves in the appropriate manner. This means no independent conversations (topic related or not), turning off cell phones (NO texting, the world will go on while you are in class), arriving late, or asking questions that are unrelated to the material being discussed. If you do arrive late, come in quietly and do NOT walk across the front of the class or else you will be asked to leave; as is the case with the other expectations mentioned above.

  3. The instructor is NOT a medical professional and therefore will NOT diagnose, speculate, or make recommendations on medical conditions based on stories or lists of symptoms. Students should instead refer those questions to their healthcare provider. At no time should the student misconstrue the opinions or statements of the instructor as medical advice or diagnosis.

  4. Instructor will respond to all student email correspondence (from GHC account only) within 24 hours Monday – Thursday and within 48 hours Friday – Sunday. Any correspondence from non-GHC accounts may go to junk email or be ignored, so it is in the student’s best interest to use their GHC account. Phone messages are not recommended as I may not be in the office to check the message.

  5. You should treat every email as a chance to practice professional, written communication skills; so please adhere to standard conventions of grammar, spelling and language when writing emails to me and other instructors at GHC. It is not acceptable to contact potential employers, bosses, or other professionals with sloppy emails (in other words: I am ur teacher, not ur friend. dont send me emails that look like txt msgs, even if u used ur iphone 2 send them. K, thnx.)

  6. Any student missing part of or all of a class is responsible for finding out what they missed from a classmate (not the instructor). I will not answer emails/messages about missed material with the exception of providing any needed handouts or worksheets.

  7. Attendance will be taken at every class as a matter of record keeping and as a tool to determine whether the final grade will be rounded. Refer to the syllabus for specifics.

  8. Students are expected to do their own work. Cheating or copying from another person/internet (without credit) is considered plagiarism and will result in a MINIMUM penalty of a zero on the exam or assignment. Examples of what could be considered cheating are: open notes/textbooks, emailing or texting (sending or receiving) during an exam, digging in a bag/purse, looking around the room, and talking; to name a few. A link to the academic integrity policy can be found in the syllabus.

  9. Lecture notes and other materials are made available to the student as a courtesy; they are NOT a replacement for the book. Neither item contains ALL the information needed for a topic so they should NOT be used as a replacement for reading or class attendance.

  10. You will be required to think and apply the information in this course. Exams may include short answers, fill-in-the-blank, table, or labeling questions; in addition to multiple choice. Memorizing facts or statements from the powerpoints will NOT make you successful in this course and thus your exam questions will not ask ‘What is the definition of a given term?’

  11. The grading scheme/rubric can be found in the syllabus. The instructor will NOT calculate tentative averages or grades, nor speculate as to whether you will get a specific grade in the course at any time.

  12. Lecture exams and lab practicals will NOT be returned to the student, but all students are encouraged to make an appointment to review their exams/practicals during office hours.

  13. No decisions or corrections will be made about suspected errors or inconsistencies with any exam/practical unless they are submitted to the instructor in writing. These will only be accepted prior to the next exam and must include: 1. your name, 2. the date of the submission, 3. the specific test, 4. the question (write it out), 5. your answer, 6. the correct answer, 7. and why you feel there is a discrepancy. The instructor will inform the student of the outcome within a week.

  14. This course is a difficult course and will require that the student spend significant amounts of time reading the text both before and after class, as well as studying, if they hope to be successful. The instructor will do anything reasonably possible to help you be successful; however, if you are struggling it is your responsibility to ask the instructor for assistance.

  15. YOU will determine your grade in this course. Simply attending class does NOT mean you will pass. You will be expected to know any information in the powerpoints/notes, covered or not in lecture, unless given other direction by the instructor. I do NOT give extra credit, so don’t ask.

The form below constitutes a contract between the student and instructor, demonstrating that the student has read both the above document as well as the syllabus and understands both. Questions should be directed to the instructor within the add/drop period for the course. By remaining in this course, you the student, are agreeing to abide by the conditions set forth for this course. If any conditions can’t be met/abided by then the student should drop/withdraw from this course.
