General Information PHED 1020 Spring 2011
Online PHED 1020 is designed for those who need flexibility in their schedule, feel comfortable communicating by email, have some experience using the Internet, and are self-motivated. It is a great way to learn at home with a course based on individual assignments. The only on-campus meeting is a proctored final exam. Course materials will be delivered through both the text and the course webpage.
Students must have regular access to a computer and the internet, and be EXTREMELY disciplined to be successful in this course. Students will work independently by reading the textbook and accessing the class webpage on the internet to complete the posted assignments. This course does NOT use DVDs.
Past experience shows that students taking this course often include: non-traditional students juggling full-time employment and other commitments, students who regularly successfully complete distance learning course options, students with successful previous college experience, or any student highly motivated to complete the course in an online format. In general, this course is not well-suited to those students struggling academically, the average incoming freshman who has no previous college experience, and those who require a high level of face-to-face instructor contact to remain on track.
Description of PHED 1020
PHED 1020 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid is an elective course. It can meet the additional 2-credit course requirement for the PHED requirement for graduation from GHC. The course is academic in nature; learning and understanding the science behind CPR and first aid is vital to successful completion. Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association is an additional benefit.
What is the work load?
As this course is a 2 credit hour course, students can expect to spend 3 to 6 hours a week involved in course work. If you use your home computer, you will save the drive time of going to and from campus twice a week. There are times when you can complete assignments ahead of the course schedule which may help with your time management and balancing your other responsibilities.
What about the Course Materials and delivery?
The course uses Georgia VIEW Vista to deliver the syllabus, weekly assignments, quizzes, projects, and discussions. Students are expected to feel comfortable using Vista and must also be willing to seek help immediately from GHC IT should Vista problems occur. If Vista problems make it difficult to complete course work, the student is expected to notify the instructor immediately and must be open to using other solutions to complete coursework.

If this is your first online course, I would highly recommend that you take the Readiness for Education At a Distance Indicator (READI) to assess your readiness, your goals, and your learning preferences.

On that page you will find several User Names and Passwords. Select and use the one that best fits your major area of study. When the READI opens, you will notice a navigation bar on the left side. The items listed in the bar are the areas that you will be measured on by the indicator. This assessment will take at least 15 minutes. At the end, a report will be displayed which you can use to help you prepare to be successful as a distance-learning student. If you find you are not a successful candidate for online learning, it is recommended you withdraw from the course.

- Able to use the WindowsTM operating system
- Able to use Microsoft WordTM word processing
- Able to send and receive e-mail using OutlookTM or Outlook ExpressTM
- Able to attach and retrieve attached files via email
- Able to use a Web browser.
- Able to use Georgia VIEW Vista

Mandatory Attendance:
All weekly assignments and exams, except for the CPR session and exam, will be submitted online. The instructor has access to information that indicates the amount of time a student spends on Vista. Students are expected to access Vista at least twice a week, especially to read email or receive any announcements posted by the instructor. All email communication must occur via Vista.
The CPR session will meet on a Saturday during the semster; the actual date may be found in the course schedule. This session is required for successful course completion, regardless of any prior training or certifications.

The components of the evaluation will include online exams, a proctored exam, assignments related to chapters, and a course project.
