Introducing GIL |
What is GIL?
GIL is an acronym fo Galileo Interconnected Libraries. GIL is a new world wide web-based library automation system that the University System of Georgia is implementing throughout its campus libraries. GIL replaces UNICORN as Georgia Highlands College's Public Catalog.

What is a Library Automation System?
Libraries once used card catalogs to send you to the right call number on the shelf. Once you got the book, the librarian stamped the circulation card and filed it away. If the book was overdue, you got a handwritten or typed notice in the mail. A library automation system puts all these functions on a computer. The outcomes are faster results for the patron and better library records. Library automation systems have been around for many years. You might remember, finding books with our previous automation system UNICORN.

Why a World Wide Web-based System?
The "I" in GIL is the answer...interconnected. This library catalog uses web technology that easily allows the user to access information from any library in the University System from any computer that has access to the Internet. In the future, GIL will also support "Universal Borrowing" for all the system libraries. More interconnection means that more information is available to you.
The primary function of GIL is to give the user information about library holdings and where they are located. GIL is operated by using a mouse. Pointing to a symbol (or icons) and clicking will move you through most of GIL's functions. |
