ENGL 1101

Definition Revision Assignment

Objective: Students will carefully and clearly articulate a definition of their particular topic, demonstrating mastery of the rhetorical mode.

Grade: Essays will be graded using the Definition Rubric.

Due Date: Friday, 22 October 2010 by 11:59 p.m.

Directions: This is a revision exercise. Each student will use the chart included to complete the revision. If no revision is submitted the student will earn a 60 provided she/he submitted the first draft of this assignment.

In addition to the chart, each student will include a statement explaining the process by which she/he came to this particular revision. In other words, what did you do to reorder your thoughts? What did you take out? What did you add? Why? How did you arrive at your thesis? Why did you choose those particular elements (term, class, characteristics)? This response will be no more than one page, double-spaced. Be clear. Be specific.

 Tips:

á           Make sure you incorporate a single sentence definition that limits the meaning of your particular topic. Essays that lack this element likely will not pass.

á             DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES, including but not limited to: dictionaries, thesauruses, websites, books, or excessive collaboration with individuals not enrolled in this course. I want YOUR definition of this particular topic.

á             The use of any outside source will constitute a violation of the guidelines of this essay and may well violate the established Academic Integrity Policy.

á             Try to build off of your narrative, which is to say: focus on the topic you have chosen and be specific!

á             Please edit carefully.

á             If you need to, you may use the grid on the second page of this document to format the assignment. Make sure each piece is put into the proper section. You may copy and paste the grid into your own word document.

á             If you are more comfortable with a traditional essay, you may format the assignment via MLA style and submit as you did with essay #1.
