Welcome to IC @ GHC! The
faculty, staff and administration at GHC
understand that information comes at people
from all directions at great speed, and that
it can be difficult and time consuming to
sift through it all, whether it be finding
sources for a term paper or locating travel
information online, and we want to help.
Starting Fall semester 2007,
Georgia Highlands is introducing a new
program to help you organize and interpret
data, which will improve student learning.
We call the program IC @ GHC, shorthand for
information competency. Information
competency is the ability to recognize what
type of information is needed, locate that
information, evaluate it, and use it
effectively.
During the 2007-2008 school
year, Area B of the core curriculum, which
is mainly communication courses and
introductory computing skills courses, will
begin emphasizing information competency in
curriculum and assignments. Each year, a new
area of the core will begin to emphasize
information competency as well. Eventually,
these types of skills will be integrated
across the entire curriculum, assisting all
students to make better, more efficient
choices about the information they need for
their lives.
The program will last a total
of five years, so most of you will not be
here at the conclusion of the program. This
first year, though, is really important. We
want all students to be aware of what IC @
GHC is and why the faculty, staff and
administration are so interested in helping
students improve their IC skills.
That is why we have set up
this website. It contains resources and
activities to help explain IC and strengthen
student skills. We hope you enjoy the site
and learn from it.
Have
a great semester at GHC!
