Welcome to the IC @ GHC website. Fall semester 2007, GHC introduced a program designed to help you organize and interpret data or information, such as you might find doing research.
IC stands for information competency, which is the ability to recognize what type of information is needed, locate that information, evaluate it and use it effectively. Stressing competency in information literacy will not only help you improve learning in college but is important in the career world as well, where employees are expected to have good information literacy skills. Just as you wouldn’t turn in a report to your boss with sketchy sources and incomplete data, you shouldn’t turn in a research paper or project that is less than competent.
Each fall, new areas of the core will implement information competency skills into the curriculum. This means that IC skills will be taught in classes from English and history to math and P.E.
The program will last for a total of five years, ending in spring of 2012, so most of you won’t be here at the conclusion of the program, but while you are here, IC will be an important aspect of your studies. We hope you find this helpful to your understanding of IC.
