The Warren Akin IV Award
The Warren Akin IV Award is named after
Dr. Akin who met an untimely death in 1983. Dr. Akin was a
charter member and the first president when AAUP was established
on what is now Georgia Highlands College. The state AAUP
established the Warren Akin IV Award to be given in recognition
of special service to education and the principle of academic
freedom, and to be housed at Georgia Highlands College. This is
displayed on the south wall of the Academic Building's lobby.
Beside the plaque is a short history, transcribed below:

Dr. Warren Akin IV served on the Floyd College faculty for nine
years, ultimately as Associate Professor of English. During his
life he embraced modesty and had a quiet self-confidence. He
possessed a respect for sound thinking and a visceral penchant
for justice. Akin was always generous with his time and energy.
He was responsible for establishing the Floyd College chapter of
the American Association of University Professors and served as
its first president. He was president of the AAUP's Georgia
State Conference from 1981 to 1983. At the time of his death, he
was on leave of absence from the College and was serving as a
staff member of the Governor's Educational Review Commission.
For Warren Akin IV no task was too big to shun and no person too
small to ignore.
