Scholarships

Scholarships Provide the Key to Success

  • Approximately 82% of GHC students have unmet financial need and cannot attend college without financial assistance.
  • While the HOPE scholarship helps many students, 43% of incoming freshmen at GHC are not immediately eligible for HOPE.
  • Non-traditional students currently account for 34% of the GHC student population, and a majority are ineligible for the HOPE scholarship as incoming freshmen. They struggle to pay for tuition until completing 30 semester hours, at which point, with a “B” average, they become eligible for the HOPE scholarship.
  • A “Bridge to HOPE” scholarship would enable non-traditional students to begin their college careers and provide them with the opportunity to “earn” the HOPE scholarship. Given the value of HOPE and the impact on the workforce and economy, this “bridge” would represent a return on investment of over 100%.
  • As a two-year unit of the University System of Georgia (USG), GHC is expected to have 47 students participating in study abroad programs by 2007; however, due to the financial status of the majority of GHC students, only seven students were able to study abroad during the 2003-04 academic year. Scholarships are crucial in providing the ability for more students to study abroad and in meeting the USG goal.
