Center for Professional Excellence
The Three R’s: Recruit, Retain and Reward
- Professional development is as critical in education as in any other industry.
- Faculty members at GHC are not routinely granted a salary increase when a promotion in rank is earned (i.e. associate professor to professor), which is typically not the case at other colleges, thus negatively impacting GHC faculty retention and recruiting efforts.
- Many faculty members are forced to take a decrease in salary or take on an overwhelming workload when completing an advanced degree program. Establishment of a Center would allow faculty release time to complete additional coursework without affecting the teaching quality in their current classes.
- College students need to be stimulated to learn. Learning stimulation means more than classroom lectures or exams – it means developing other ways to engage students. Teaching or learning grants would allow faculty to provide their students with new ways of learning. Professors could develop a laboratory project, allowing students to work in teams to build a scientific model; or faculty could invite guest speakers such as novelists, artists or business leaders to inspire their students to achieve.
- Opportunities provided to GHC employees for professional development through an established Center will be designed and funded based on a competitive process in which all disbursements must be linked directly to department and institutional goals for achieving excellence.
