Georgia Highlands College Course Syllabus ̶ Math 1113, College Algebra Spring Semester 2010 Course: MATH 1113, Precalculus Course Description: MATH 1113 is precalculus. This course is designed to prepare students for calculus, physics, and related technical subjects. Topics include an intensive study of algebraic and trigonometric functions accompanied by analytic geometry as well as DeMoivre’s theorem, polar coordinates, and conic sections. Appropriate technology is utilized in the instructional process. Students are strongly encouraged to schedule a meeting with the instructor whenever necessary to discuss class policies or course material.

Textbook: Precalculus, 4th edition, Blitzer Additional Resources: TI-83 or equivalent graphing calculator is required. Calculator Requirement: Each student taking this course needs access to a TI-83 or equivalent graphing/scientific calculator. Students will use their calculator while participating in class, taking exams, and completing homework exercises. Please note that sharing calculators during graded assignments is not permitted Course Content: Selected sections from chapters 4-6. Grading Policies: Four exams and a comprehensive final exam will be given during the semester. Each exam will count 100 points, while the comprehensive final exam will count 200 points. A short quiz will be given on every non-exam days with the total quiz grades counting 100 points. The usual grading scale (90%—100% is an A, 80%—90% is a B, etc.) will apply. Students who simply quit attending class without officially withdrawing will receive a grade of F in the class. Additionally, students are encouraged to retain copies of all graded coursework returned during the semester. The coursework will aid students in preparing for the final exam and will serve as evidence of academic performance throughout the semester. The instructor retains the prerogative of altering the above plans as circumstances dictate. Academic Policies: If a student simply quits attending class without officially withdrawing, the student will receive a grade of F in the class. The last day for officially withdrawing from any class without grade penalty is mid-semester. Withdrawals after mid-semester are subject to approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and will be issued only in cases of extreme emergency or hardship. Information Competency:
Class Attendance & Make-up Exams: Students are expected to attend each and every scheduled class session. Since lectures begin promptly at the scheduled time, students are encouraged to avoid arriving late to class. Attendance will be reflected in students’ grades through the daily quizzes. The student’s lowest quiz grade will be dropped. If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to email the instructor for the assignment. Students absent for an exam or quiz will not be allowed to make up the assignments unless they contact the instructor BEFORE the missed class AND the instructor gives the student permission to make up the exam. Students must make arrangements for making up the work PRIOR to the scheduled class date. Students will be allowed to make up the work only under extreme circumstances, and no make-up exams will be administered or late work will be accepted if students do not contact the instructor in advance of the originally scheduled exam date. Academic Dishonesty: Cheating will not be tolerated in this class. If the instructor suspects a student of cheating, the instructor will notify the student of the allegations outside of class. The allegations will be referred to the Director of Student Life for appropriate action. The procedures and penalties implemented both by the instructor and the Director of Student Life shall be in accordance with the college's Academic Integrity Policy. Special Note to Students Receiving Financial Aid: This message applies only to students receiving financial aid: Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly. Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each class. Students who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation. If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form.
