Topics include properties of numbers, linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, polynomials, and rational expressions and roots. Students must pass the class with a C or better and also pass the statewide exit examination. Prerequisites: Satisfactory placement scores/MATH 0097 Instructor: Kelly Shane Office: Office W-221, Floyd Campus Office Hours: Please note that additional office hours are available after class and by appointment. Students are strongly encouraged to schedule a meeting with the instructor whenever necessary to discuss class policies or course material.

Textbook: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, A Combined Course, 3rd Edition, Charles P. McKeague Course Content: Chapters 6 – 10 of the textbook as well as selected sections of chapter 12. Some COMPASS review material will be included in the course. Grading Policies: Five exams will be given during the semester. Each exam will count 100 points. Homework will be due every class. Homework assignments will count a total of 50 points. Students who have attended all classes and turned in all homework covered on an exam may rework missed test questions for partial credit (up to 1/3 points per points missed)— the student must turn in the homework before the exam to be eligible. The following grading scale will apply: A - 90%-100% B - 80%-90% C - 70%-80% F - less than 70%
A%, B%, C%, IP, and F% are potential grades in this course. An IP means IN PROGRESS and is awarded only to those students eligible to take the COMPASS exit exam but who do not earn the required score on COMPASS to exit Learning Support mathematics. Students not deemed eligible to take COMPASS will earn a grade of F for the course. Note: There is no D grade in MATH0099. Students with an average below 70% will receive an F in the course. Note: Please keep a copy of all graded tests, homework and all other relevant documents from the course until the end of the semester. If a student needs to go through a grade appeals process for any reason, without documentation, the appeals process will become weak for them to establish a case. COMPASS: In order to complete Learning Support requirements for mathematics, students must earn a grade of C or better in MATH 0099 and pass the COMPASS exit exam with a score of 40 or higher. Note: This is a tentative schedule and the instructor reserves the prerogative of altering the above plans as circumstances dictate. Academic Policies: Students who simply quit attending class without officially withdrawing will receive a grade of F in the class. A grade of W (Withdrawal Passing) cannot be awarded after Midterm without the approval of the Academic Vice President. A grade of W after midterm requires a “documentable hardship”, which cannot be the avoidance of a bad grade. Anyone who simply abandons the course will receive a grade of F. Midterm Date: March 4 Student Learning Outcomes: Students completing this course should satisfy the following goal and learning outcomes: * Students will be able to demonstrate algebraic skills in solving equations. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical thought and methods. * Students will be able to graph an abstract function. * Students will be able to model concrete problems and arrive at solutions. * Students will be able to demonstrate algebraic skills in solving inequalities. * Students will be able to use appropriate technology to enhance mathematical thinking and understanding. Class Attendance and Make-up Exams: Students are expected to attend each and every scheduled class session. Attendance will be reflected in students’ grades through homework assignments. There will be allowances for one late homework assignment over the course of the semester. Students absent for an exam or to turn in assignments will not be allowed to make up the exam or assignments unless they contact the instructor BEFORE the missed class AND the instructor gives the student permission to make up the exam or assignment. Students must make arrangements for making up the work PRIOR to the scheduled class date. Students will be allowed to make up the work only under extreme circumstances, and no make-up exams will be administered or late work will be accepted if students do not contact the instructor in advance of the originally scheduled exam date or assignment due date. Due to MATH0099 being a developmental course, if a student is absent for more than 15% of the course, he/she will not be allowed to turn in any make-up work until gaining permission directly from the Director of Academic Support. Academic Dishonesty: Cheating will not be tolerated in this class. If the instructor suspects a student of cheating, the instructor will notify the student of the allegations outside of class. Then, the allegations will be referred to the Director of Student Life for appropriate action. The procedures and penalties implemented both by the instructor and the Director of Student Life shall be in accordance with the college's Academic Integrity Policy, online at: http://highlands.edu/academics/academicaffairs/academicintegritypolicy.htm Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance: Students who feel they need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should make an appointment with the Access Center (Disabilities Support office: Floyd location, 706.802.5003; Cartersville location, 678.872.8009). Access Center personnel will offer information and guidance, as well as coordinate reasonable accommodations under ADA. Students are welcome to contact the instructor privately, outside of class, to discuss specific accommodation requests. Special Note to Students Receiving Financial Aid: This message applies only to students receiving financial aid: Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly. Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each class. Students who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation. If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form. Inclement Weather Policy: If there is inclement weather, the college posts necessary announcements at http://www.highlands.edu. Check the web site for updates, if possible. In Conclusion: If you have any questions, comments, or concerns during the semester, please feel free to contact me.
