ENGLISH 0099

Some questions and answers for students

Why did I have to take this class?

You scored below 60 on the COMPASS Placement Test. This indicates that your English usage and writing skills are not sufficient to be successful in credit-level English. This class is designed to improve your skills in writing organized effective paragraphs. Correct grammar will also be emphasized.

What will this course do for me?

It will help you improve your ability to write paragraphs and essays in response to specific assignments. You will learn to state your topic well and to support it in grammatically correct sentences. The goal is to attain a level of writing competency needed for college-level course work.

What do I have to do to get into credit-level courses?

All three of the following items are requried.
(1) Pass the course with a "C" or better

(2) Pass the departmental writing samples
(3) Score 60 or above on the COMPASS Exit Test

What is the "writing sample"?

A few weeks before the end of the term, students will be required to write a minimum of two (2) short essays for submission to a panel of instructors. The topics will be given and all writing will be done in class. A panel of instructors from the Georgia Highlands English Department will read the paragraphs and give them a "pass" or a "fail" mark. Students must pass 1 of the 2 essays to be eligible for the COMPASS Exit test and to pass the course.

What if I don't pass the "writing sample"?

Students who do not pass the "writing sample" will not pass the course and will be required to repeat it. In special cases, instructors may appeal the student's work and get a second chance to submit essays. This is done only in special cases and requires a written appeal by the instructor and submission of a portfolio of student work.

When do I take the Exit test?

The COMPASS Exit test is always given near the end of the term and your instructor will tell you the test schedule. It is your responsibility to get to the test and to bring a photo ID for test entry. Remember that you are only eligible for the exit test AFTER you have passed your "writing sample."

What if I don't pass the Exit test?

You will have two (2) chances to pass the test. If you don't pass it, you will have to repeat the ENGLISH 0099 course.

How many times can I take ENGLISH 0099?

You have three (3) attempts at the course. Then, state regulations say you must be dismissed from college. In some cases, an extra attempt is given. To see about the extra attempt, you must contact the office of Academic Support. You can reach the office by e-mail (as@highlands.edu) or at (706) 295-6357.

What courses are open for me while I am in ENGLISH 0099?

You are prohibited from taking any higher level English courses until you have successfully completed English 0099. Many college-level courses require completion of English 0099 BEFORE you can take them. Other academic courses may be available to you depending upon your academic support requirements in other areas. You need to talk with your academic advisor for information on what is available for you.

Does this count in my grade point average (GPA)?

NO. Academic Support courses do not count in your GPA. However, they DO show on your transcript and they MAY AFFECT your eligibility for financial aid from either HOPE or Pell Grants.

Where can I get more information about this class?

Contact the Office of Academic Support on the Rome Campus (706) 295-6357. For further discussion, see your instructor or one of the directors at your site of Georgia Highlands College. You can also contact any of these persons by e-mail.
