“Celebrate the Freedom to Read” - Banned Books Week, 9/23 - 30, 2000.
The freedom of speech granted by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is challenged on a regular basis. Printed materials, books, short stories, and poetry are frequently challenged by persons who feel it necessary to limit exposure to the words written on those pages. Titles such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Color Purple, and the Bible are just a few examples of those books that have been banned or challenged over time. In an effort to remind us that we do have the freedom to read, the American Library Association and several other sponsors have an annual promotion called Banned Books Week.
This year's theme is “Fish in the River of Knowledge – Celebrate Your Freedom to Read.” Join Georgia Highlands College Library in this year's celebration with our third annual reading of banned or challenged books on Sept. 25th from 11:00 to 1:00 as a reminder that we have the right to read, to access all materials, and to gain knowledge and understanding.
Try to come by the library and see the display of banned or challenged books. Some to the titles may actually surprise you. Also review our website for more information.
