Discover the world of photography in
Saint Petersburg, Russia’s architectural masterpiece.
Enhance your photographic skills as you focus on a skyline filled with gold domes, palaces, cathedrals and monuments. From the magic of the White Nights to the beauty of its Baroque buildings, St. Petersburg is a photographic masterpiece waiting to be captured. Photography I is designed to be an introduction to the use of the camera as a creative tool. Students receive instruction on the principles of the photographic process. The lectures for the course covers the following topics: history of photography, the mechanics of the camera, exposure, film and digital storage, lenses, and composition.

Fieldtrips Field trips include a walking tour of monuments and bridges, a trip to Pavlovsk Park, and an all night outing to capture the magic of the White Nights and the lights of the drawbridges. The bridges and monuments of St. Petersburg provide photographers from all over the world an opportunity to capture both traditional Russian stylized designs along with soviet influenced architecture. |

Pavlovsk Park is regarded as one of the finest landscape parks in Europe. This fieldtrip takes us by metro and train to the park which provides a poetic photographic backdrop complete with pavilions and sculptures on 1,500 acres. The third field trip combines the lights of the drawbridges with the magic of the White Nights making for a memorable all night fieldtrip that will not soon be forgotten.

City Excursions Excursions into the city include a visit to the Hermitage Museum, Peterhoff, Peter and Paul Fortress, the Baltica Brewery, the homes of authors, churches and historical sites along with a canal tour. While the group excursions are provided for all students, photography students will benefit and capture unique compositions.

Peterhoff Originally constructed as the summer palace for Peter the Great, today Peterhoff is a mixture of palaces and fountains that flow into the Gulf of Finland. Peter the Great visited Versailles and vowed to create a more magnificent version. Each fountain is an individual work of art.

Photography 1 gives students the opportunity to learn the art of photography while experiencing a city that is like nothing else in the world. From the natural beauty of the White Nights, to the architecture along with the culture and the history, studying abroad In Saint Petersburg is a unique experience that will provide a lifetime of memories. |

This
course is offered through the European Council of the University System
of Georgia and is taught on location in Saint Petersburg, Russia at the
St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University. Photography 1 is a
three-hour lower division course. A SLR camera, either 35mm or digital
is required.
