Fall Semester 2000  Course Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic fundamentals and concepts of general sociology.   Sociology is the scientific study of human society and social interaction.  The student will gain an understanding of the science of sociology as well as an insightful awareness of the effects of culture and group involvement on one's psychosocial development and behavior.  Students are expected to learn to recognize differing perspectives and points of view; to construct and evaluate argument; form hypotheses and anticipate consequences; recognize how governmental systems affect social, economic, and political developments; understand cultural diversity; and understand the cause and effect relationships in society.  The student will also gain a basic understanding of research methodology.  Topics will include social institutions, social change, and social issues with an emphases on sociology's relevance in today's world.

 

Required Books:  Essentials of Sociology, Third Edition – James M. Henslin

Course Requirements: 

 

1.       Class Participation:  Read your text and be ready to contribute when asked.

 

2.       Attendance.   Class meets MW from 7:30-8:45p.m.   Attendance will be noted every class.  Students are expected  to attend every class unless class is cancelled by the instructor or the school.   You will have approximately 29 nights of class out of the possible 31 nights since Sept. 4 and Nov. 23 are holidays for you.   You will receive 4 points every time you attend class and will lose 4 points every class you miss regardless of the reason for a total of 120 points.  I will GIVE you the other 4 needed for a total of the required 120 points for Sept. 4 holiday.  Nothing will be counted off for the Nov. holiday.  The sign-in sheet will be passed around at the beginning of class.  Again, the maximum points earned will be 120 points toward your final grade.

 

3.       Successfully Complete Four Exams.  No make-up exams will be given unless there is documentation showing serious cause; otherwise a grad of "0" will be assigned for that exam.  Final exam cannot be rescheduled for any reason.    Each exam is worth a maximum of 100 points for a total of 400 maximum towards your final grade.

 

4.       Assignments:  You will be given 10 assignments worth 20 points each towards your final grade for a maximum total of 200 points.  Some of these will include finding resources on the Internet,  finding and reporting information on web sites, assignments related to videos, and reports.  Some of these may be done in class;  others will be “homework”.   Take-home assignments will be due the following class in order to receive credit.   If you are absent that day,  you may e-mail you assignment  to me or have it delivered to my mail box at the Cartersville campus before the next class time;  otherwise it will be considered late.   2 points will be deducted per each class period that it is late. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5.    Student Assistance:   Instructor will provide needed assistance for any student with questions, 

       concerns, or  problems dealing with assignments or grades.  Remedies will be offered or

       suggested and every effort will be  made to help every student reach his or her academic or   

       classroom goals this semester.

 

6.   Policies Concerning Student Complaints, Dishonesty, Etc:  For specifics not mentioned, see

       Student Handbook.

 

 

7.    Miscellaneous

 

>Instructor reserves the right to make changes, deletions, or additions to the schedule, 

   assignments , or  requirement as needed and will notify students of such changes.

 

> Students are requested not to work on computers during class unless it is part of that day’s

           assignments  or you are instructed to do so.  If you have been accustomed to taking

           notes on the computer, you may continue to do so but I will reserve the right to check your

           work from time to time and may at any time request that you send a copy of your notes to my

           email when class is over.  Any student who is found to be doing computer activities unrelated

           to class assignments or note taking will have the day’s class attendence points deducted from

           his or her final grade.

 

>Grading Scale:  648-720 points will receive an A; 576-647 will receive a B; 504-575 will receive a 

  C; 432-503 will receive  a D.  Anything below 432 (431 or less) will receive an F.

  

   You will have 4 exams for a maximum of 100 points each for a total of      400 points maximum

   You will have 10 assignments for a maximum of 10 points each total of     200 points maximum

   You will have 30 classes for a maximum of 4 points each for a total of        120 points maximum

                                                                       The total maximum points             720

 

    Remember that in order to have an “A” you must collect  between 648-720 points

                                                            a   “B”  from 576-647 points

                                                            a   “C”  from 504-575 points

                                                            a   “D”  from 432-503points

                                                           an  “F”  431 or less

     

 

>Important Dates:

 

   August 21-22………………..Drop-add period;

   October 12…………………..Midterm.  Last Day to drop with a W

   Sept. 5 and Nov. 22 – 26……Holidays

   December 9…………………Classes End

   December 11-16…………….Exams

 

It is my hope that each of you will gain during this semester:

 

1.       A better appreciation for and a better understanding of sociology in general.

2.       An awareness of how society shapes an individual and how the individual’s actions can change social policy.

3.       An ability to view the world from a broader perspective.

4.       An understanding of how beliefs and viewpoints operate in and influence people in society.
