Course Objectives: The science content introduced in these courses provides an integrated overview of Life and Earth Science and Physical Science content in preparation for teaching science at the elementary school grade levels. Topics identified in the K-5 Georgia Performance Science Standards will be addressed in lessons that allow Early Childhood Education majors to learn science in the non-traditional ways they will eventually be expected to teach in their own classrooms.

 

Course Description ISCI 2001: This course is an integrated overview of the core Life and Earth Science content covered in the K-5 Georgia Performance Standards. Topics include the Solar System, Earth Processes, Characteristics of Living Organisms, Biodiversity and the Natural History of Georgia. Students will gain conceptual understanding through inquiry-oriented, activity-based pedagogical strategies in order to have experience learning science content in the ways they will be expected to teach in the future.

 

Course Description ISCI 2002: This course is an integrated overview of the core Physical Science content covered in the K-5 Georgia Performance Standards. Topics include The Nature of Matter, Chemical and Physical Changes, Motion, Force, Heat, Electricity, Magnetism, Sound and Light. Students will gain conceptual understanding through inquiry-oriented, activity-based pedagogical strategies in order to have experience learning science content in the ways they will be expected to teach in the future.

 

 

Instructional Philosophy: ISCI 2001 and ISCI 2002 will bridge the gulf between scientific and education training by allowing future teachers to learn new scientific information through a variety of instructional methods. This non-traditional activity-based approach to college science will help prospective elementary school teachers make connections between methods of teaching and learning science.

 

ISCI 2001 and ISCI 2002 are not intended to be taught as method-based classes.  It is not the intention of the classes to prepare the teacher on how to teach specific grade levels in the elementary classroom. Each class uses an activities based teaching philosophy to teach these core-basic science concepts.  Because activities-based instruction is at the center of the instructional philosophy of both classes, it is very important that students be present to perform, carry out activities, learn to work with others to share ideas, and communicate with their classmates during the process.   Learning by doing and sharing thoughts and information during the process is a very important aspect of these classes.

 

Academic Honesty: You are expected to maintain high standards of academic integrity. The Georgia Highlands College Academic Integrity Code, found in the Student Handbook, clarifies common types of academic misconduct. Dishonesty will not be tolerated; evidence of cheating will result in no credit for the assignment, or depending on the case, a grade of “F” for the course as well as sanction(s).

 ISCI 2001 – Guidelines for Content and Evaluation

 

Learning Outcomes: Students in ISCI 2001 will be able to characterize the abiotic and biotic features of the Earth, as well as the place of our planet within the Solar System and Universe. Students will assemble a collection of information that displays recognition of the basic aspects of Life and Earth Science. Students will document recognition of the organization and content of the K-5 Georgia Performance Standards in Life and Earth Science, as well as the conceptual understanding of those Standards.

 

Secondary learning outcomes include demonstrating the ability to use traditional scientific tools and electronic technology as a means to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in learning, to gather information, to manage and interpret data, and to enhance communication. Students will also demonstrate the ability to write and speak logically, clearly, precisely, and the ability to acquire, organize, present and document information and ideas.

 

 

ISCI 2002 – Guidelines for Content and Evaluation

 

Learning Outcomes: Students in ISCI 2002 will be able to characterize the various aspects of the physical world around us.  Students will exam the nature of matter, how matter is affected by various types of forces, electricity and magnetism, as well as the place of our planet within the Solar System and Universe. Students will assemble a collection of information that displays recognition of the basic aspects of Physical Science. Students will document recognition of the organization and content of the K-5 Georgia Performance Standards in Physical Science, as well as the conceptual understanding of those Standards.

 

Secondary learning outcomes include demonstrating the ability to use traditional scientific tools and other electronic technology as a means to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in learning, to gather information, to manage and interpret data, and to enhance communication. Students will also demonstrate the ability to write and speak logically, clearly, precisely, and the ability to acquire, organize, present and document information and ideas.

Mastery of these learning outcomes will be demonstrated by the knowledge and skill shown in weekly quizzes, weekly activities, a course portfolio, and midterm/final examinations.

 

Assessment

 

Course Assessment: Your course grade will be calculated based on the following criteria:

PLEASE NOTE: Due to budgetary shortages, students will now be required to purchase scantrons for the midterm and final exams at the school bookstore.  To take an examination you must have a scantron.  Scantrons that are damaged (non-scanable) will not be accepted.  It is a good idea to purchase backups.  You will have 2 tests so you will need 4-6 scantrons. 

 

Contents of the Portfolio

1. Pre-Lesson Questions:   Before each chapter/topic, you will be given a set of questions to answer based on your reading and/or class information obtained through participation.  These questions are to be answered fully and individually.  Copying of answers is strictly forbidden and will result in a zero for this part of the portfolio. 

 

2. Practice Sheets:  You will be assigned practice sheets in class to complete.  Practice sheets for that week or topic should be included in the portfolio. 

 

 

3. Activities:  As you complete various activities they are to be included as a part of your portfolio.  WAR reports will also be included.

 

4. Math Problems: You will be assigned math problems to complete for specific topics.  These should be included in a place to be determined in your portfolio.  All math problems are to be completed on a separate sheet of  paper and attached to the question sheet.

*Other Assignments: As we move through the semester, there may be other assignments given for the portfolio.  You will be instructed as how to complete them and where they go in your portfolio.

 

Notes on the Exams

 

A midterm and final exam will be given over material covered to that point in the semester.

 

To make-up a missed exam, you must have a verifiable excuse, such as a health emergency, death in the family, etc.  You must contact me within 24-48 hours of the missed exam (or before) by email and phone.  The instructor has the right to not give the makeup if any of these requirements are not met by the student. 

 

The final exam will cover the material presented in the last 8 weeks of the class and contains some comprehensive questions.

 

During the mid-term and final exam, students are expected to be on time.  You will have the full 1:50 to complete the exam.  It is my policy that if a student is late for the exam they must begin taking the test when they arrive.  They will have the remaining time to complete the exam (For example, a student arrives 50 minutes late. They will have one hour to complete the exam).  It is imperative that the student contact me via cell phone or contact another person to let me know about the situation. 

 

An optional final exam project will be assigned during the second part of the semester. Instructions for this project will be provided for you online.  This will count for 30% of your final exam grade if you choose to complete the project.  

 

Due to ongoing budget problems, students will have to purchase scantrons for the objective part of the midterm and final exams in the bookstore.  You will need two for the midterm and one for the final exam.  You may want to purchase a few extra in case mistakes are made during the exam. 

 

Attendance and Participation (see above)

 

Attendance and Participation: Much of this course involves active learning completed within the classroom time period. Being present in class is a critical component of this class.  You will not be able to make up most assignments if you do not attend class.  As stated previously, no make-ups will be allowed for quizzes and participation points.  If you miss an activity that requires a written WAR report you will only be able to make up this activity if you have a valid or qualified excuse (death in the family, extended illness, etc.)  If you do have a valid excuse any make-up activities are to be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor. 

 

Attendance will be taken at the end of each class. Attendance is recorded for the purpose of making me aware of attendance trends of individual students. 

 

As future educators, students are expected to exhibit high standards of behavior and participation in the course. Students are expected to make positive contributions to each class by being prepared and involved.  An atmosphere of collegiate inquiry about the natural world is expected. Use of poor grammar, excessive slang, profanity, or other negative behavior is not acceptable. The use of cell phones, pagers, etc. during class is not permitted.

 

Extended Absence Attendance Policy :  “Students who have circumstances that prevent them from continuing to attend classes over an extended period of time, sometimes request that the faculty member permit them to submit work in absentia to receive credit to complete the course.  If the concurrent absences will constitute more than 15% of the class sessions for the term, then written permission from the Division Chair is required before any course assignments can be completed while missing class.  The student must be in good academic standing in the course to make the request.  All approved coursework must be completed by the end of the semester in which the course was begun.”  (Note:  If a program has a more stringent absence policy than this, then the program policy prevails)

 

Withdrawal Policy

If you withdraw from any course, you must go to the Admissions and Records Office to fill out the appropriate forms.  It is your responsibility to complete all forms to be able to withdraw and receive a 'W' for the course.  If you withdraw after the mid-semester date, you will receive a 'WF' or an F. 

Students are allowed to file for 'hardship' if circumstances occur after the mid-semester date which require them to withdraw.  You will be required to fill out specific paperwork and present this to the Vice-President of Academic Affairs.  Your information will be reviewed, and if approved, you will be given a WF or F depending on the instructor's input.  If all conditions are met, then with the approval of the instructor, you will be able to withdraw without being penalized.

It is also wise to check with the Financial Aid Office to see how a hardship withdrawal may affect your financial aid.

Students Rights and Academic Integrity Policy:

Financial Aid Statement:

 

This message only applies to students receiving financial aid:  Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly.  Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each class.  Students who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation.  If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form.
