Responsibilities of Academic Advisors

 

·                                                         Respect the student’s right to privacy of educational records (FERPA)

·                                                         Be accessible to students (This includes maintaining regular office hours.)

·                                                         Strengthen advising skills by regularly participating in training activities

·                                                         Be familiar with institutional regulations and academic policies and procedures and communicate these to the student

·                                                         Offer advice on course selection (New Student Orientation process)

·                                                         Assist with the development of an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements (Early Bird Advising process)

·                                                         Assist with goal-setting, both short-term and long term, that are consistent with student’s abilities and interests (This includes course       load and factors such as academic background, program demands, employment or personal commitments)

·                                                         Discuss academic performance and the implications of poor academic performance

·                                                         Make referrals to appropriate resources as needed (This includes Tutorial Services, Financial Aid, and Counseling & Career Services)
