What is Classroom Based Advising?

Classroom-Based Advising is a presentation made by faculty to their students each semester at each instructional site of Georgia Highlands College.   Classroom Based Advising support the contention that establishing personal contact with faculty is consistently linked with student success, persistence and satisfaction.

When does Classroom Based Advising Occur? 

·    Specify your areas of knowledge – those areas in which you could advise most effectively

·    Explain how you can be reached outside of class.  Give office hours and encourage students to come and see you with any questions

·    Offer to answer any general advising questions in class

·    Remind students of your availability as a faculty advisor

·    Discuss dates for dropping classes without penalty

·    Discuss the importance of proper planning and registering early

·    Encourage students who are undecided about their majors to make an appointment with Counseling and Career

·   Review degree requirements (powerpoint available)

·    Discuss current educational opportunities and program requirements at transfer schools

·    Remind students that they should petition to graduate at least one semester prior to anticipated date of graduation
