Academic Advising:  Mission Statement

In support of Georgia Highlands College Mission and Goals, academic advising is a joint venture for a student aided by a faculty member to explore and to determine educational options, which will ultimately lead to achievement of personal and professional goals, whether that is within the realm of the core curriculum, transfer programs, cooperative degree programs, or career programs.  Academic advising is available to all students, regardless of need, at each educational site.  Academic advising can be seen as a teaching opportunity, as well.  Faculty members assist students:

• in setting realistic educational goals
• in learning and applying decision-making strategies, and
• in making appropriate choices.

 Expected Outcomes for Academic Advising

• New students will learn about academic requirements.
• Students will be aware of institutional resources available to meet their individual educational needs and aspirations.
• Currently enrolled students will interact with an advisor prior to registration.
• Students will plan a program of study tailored to their academic talents and professional interests.
• Students will understand the importance of strategic planning for coursework to be undertaken.
