Notes

1)     To factor a polynomial completely, look for:

a.      greatest common factor, GCF

b.      a perfect square trinomial

c.      a different of two squares

d.      a pair of binomial factors

e.      a grouping of terms

2)     Factor it out if there is a common factor.

3)     If it is binomial (two terms), check if it is the difference of two squares.

4)      If it is trinomial (three terms), check if it is a perfect square trinomial.  If is not a perfect square, check if the coefficient of squared term is 1 then use the method in section 5.2.  If the coefficient of the squared terms is not equal to 1, use general factoring methods.

5)     If the polynomial has more than three terms, try to factor by using the grouping of terms.

6)     Check that each factor is prime.
