RGTE Essay Assignments and Evaluation Method
TEXT: Hodges' Harbrace Handbook (15th or 16th edition)
PREREQUISITES: This course is required of students who fail the essay portion of the Regents' Test for the second time and students who have accumulated 45 semester hours (excluding Developmental Studies courses) and have not passed the Regents' Essay Test.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: RGTE 0199 focuses on intensive instruction in the structure and mechanics of writing the essay under a time limit. The components of this instruction include basic grammar, diction, structure, and development. Because it is an online course, RGTE 0199 allows the instructor and the student to focus on individual writing deficiencies.
REQUIREMENTS: All students enrolled in RGTE 0199 must attend one of the mandatory orientation sessions (NOTE: there will be no mandatory orientation during summer session). The class will not meet together again, although you may request or be asked to meet with me on an individual basis. All assignments will be sent via email and posted on my web site. Essays sent via email should be submitted as Microsoft Word documents. If you are able to hand deliver the assignment, it may be hand-written. Please DO NOT use word processing programs other than Microsoft Word.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SECURE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER, MICROSOFT WORD, AN INTERNET ACCOUNT, AND AN E-MAIL ACCOUNT. THIS IS AN ONLINE COURSE, SO YOU SHOULD ALSO POSSESS THE NECESSARY COMPUTER SKILLS.
You will be required to complete five Regents' Test-type essays, each within a 60-minute time limit. Each assignment will have a specific due date (though you are welcome to submit essays early). If for ANY reason (technical or personal), you do not submit an essay on that date, you will have two (2) calendar days to submit it. After that, the work will not be accepted, and you must move on to the next assignment.
IN-PERSON CONFERENCES: You may set an appointment to visit me at my office (Rome campus, F-170) for a personal conference in order to go over your work on an individual basis. Please remember to bring essays and other writing samples. PLEASE EMAIL ME TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT BEFORE COMING TO MY OFFICE. AN APPOINTMENT WILL ASSURE THAT I HAVE SCHEDULED A BLOCK OF TIME TO MEET SPECIFICALLY WITH YOU.
GRADES: If you complete 0199 and pass the Regents' Test, you will receive a grade of S (Satisfactory). If you complete the 0199 coursework but fail the Regents' Test, you will receive an IP (In Progress). If you fail to complete the 0199 coursework, you will receive U (Unsatisfactory).
ASSIGNMENTS: You must complete ALL of the required essay assignments listed in the class schedule. Since the purpose of the essay assignments is to help you prepare for the Regents’ Test, you should NOT take more than 60 minutes to write each essay. Essays that are submitted on time will usually be evaluated within one week. Essays that are submitted one to two days late will be evaluated within two weeks. Essays that are submitted more than three days late will NOT be evaluated.
