Choose and
read any story from the following
selections:

Good Man Is Hard to Find”, “Baba and Me”, “Thinking as a Hobby”

-Pocketful of Prose collections on
reserve in the GHC Library
Then, compose
a “report” on the story in the form of an essay, using proper MLA
citation for information gained from external/secondary sources. The
printed essay will be turned-in December 5 at the start of class, and the essay
must also be sent to www.turnitin.com .
Your report
must contain the following information:
-Brief biography of the author which will
incorporate researched information (1/2 page)
-Proper parenthetical and works cited entries
for all source material used in author’s biography (Remember to also adhere to the
principles of proper paraphrasing with source
material)
-Identification and description of the
protagonist of the story which should be your
original writing, not researched information. Identify here if the story
is fiction or non-fiction as well. (1/2 page)
-Answer to the following question: What
aspect of the story did you find the most interesting or the most unique, and
why? This should also be your original observation,
using no research (1/2 page )

Your “daily points total” counts as an essay or exam grade in your final
average, and includes all points earned on various classwork and homework
assignments. To date, you have had the opportunities to earn a total of 50
points in this area. This assignment will be worth up to 50 points.
English 1102
will provide an introduction to literature, and short stories like those in the
short story collection will be
covered in that course, as well as terminology relating to such as
“protagonist.” Thus, this is also a chance to get a head-start on Engl 1102.
You are not
limited to these sources, but to provide you with a starting point, consider
the authors’ biographies available at www.biography.com,
various reference books in the Library, various MLA databases in GALILEO, various e-books in GIL.
According to
Barnet’s An Introduction to Literature, “protagonist” is defined as “the
chief character in a literary work” (1771).
