This course seeks to develop an understanding of the arts built upon an exposure to the painting, sculpture, architecture, and other art of contemporary and earlier times. Illustrated lectures and readings present the sociological and psychological factors that influence the production of art and show the basic problems of design and technique in the development of an artist and his/her works.
Student Learning Outcome : Student will demonstrate their ability to make informed responses to visual art through verbal and written responses and testing. These responses will lead to an appreciation of art.
Class Policies:
- Students are required to be present and on time at each class. Students are allowed 4 unexcused absences. After 4 absences, students will drop 10 points for each subsequent class missed.
- Students are expected to take notes, as portions of the tests will come from lectures.
- Students should not talk without permission, receive cell phone calls, or leave the class during lecture time.
- All electronic devices must be turned off and out of sight during tests! Any camera phones, text-messaging devices, etc. found out during tests will be confiscated until after the test.
- Laptop computers are not to be used in class without permission. Advance notice will be given for when and how computers are to be used in this course.
- If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to catch up on the information! Even if you were not in attendance when something was assigned, you are still expected to turn it in and turn it on time.
- Plagiarism will not be allowed. Any paper or test in which all or parts have been plagiarized will receive a zero (0) for that assignment.
Testing and Grading:
- Four tests will be given. Each test will cover two or more chapters (each test is worth 100 points). There will be an optional cumulative, essay-format Final (also worth 100 points).
- There will be no makeup tests. Students may choose to take the final in order to make up for a low or missed grade.
- Each student will keep a journal in order to make brief entries (4-6 sentences) about assigned readings or discussion questions. There will be 10 entries worth 10 points each (100). Journals are to be turned in on the day of each test, in order to be checked off.
- You can determine your grade by dividing the points you have earned by total possible points (500). Grading – 1-.9=A, .89-.8=B, .79-.70=C, .69-.6=D, .59-0=F.
- Occasionally, there may be a class project assigned for 5-10 extra credit points each. Due dates will be assigned in class.
Due to the subject matter and nature of this course, the syllabus and schedule may change at anytime. Advance notice will be given whenever possible.

This message applies only to students receiving financial aid: Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly. Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each class. Students who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation. If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form.
