Drawing 1- Constructing A Head

  • Estimate Height and Width of head
  • Lightly sketch in the outside edge of head and neck contained within four reference points
  • Find the horizontal axis (line through the tear ducts of the eye)
  • Find the vertical axis (center of the face through the nose)
  • Find the planar edge of the face
  • Now, sketch in the masses of the form
    • Area of the eyes, thickness of the eyebrows
    • Plane of the nose, size and shape of the ears
    • Mass of the lips
  • Check your Measurements
  • Indicate everything as simple shapes first (it is easier to make adjustments on simple forms rather than fully rendered features.
  • Find what areas are in shadow and what are in light
  • Indicate the line that separates the two
  • ‘Push back’ drawing (rub charcoal into uniform tone)
  • Erase out areas of light
  • Now this is the simple structure upon which to make your refinements.
