The Tutorial Center

    It is the purpose of the Georgia Highlands College Tutorial Center to help students to succeed in their chosen college curriculum and to help them improve their academic skills.  The staff of the Tutorial Center is dedicated to helping students acquire the skills to become independent learners and to promote the education received by students in the classroom.  Tutors do not grade papers or in any way substitute for classroom instruction and course instructors provide the standard for grading.

 

The Tutorial Center provides

  • One-to-one tutorials in areas of math, English, and reading.

  • Information and practice for standardized tests for the college: Compass, Regents, SAT, and GACE Basic Skills

  • The opportunity for group study.

  • Computerized tutorial assistance.

  • Workshops in special areas of study

The staff consists of two full-time tutors, Jennifer Hicks who oversees the Tutorial Center in Rome and Nea Martin who oversees the Tutorial Center in Cartersville.  The Tutorial Centers have several permanent part-time tutors.  Peer tutors may also be hired throughout the year to work with students in specific areas.  Students interested in working as a peer tutor should contact Jennifer Hicks in Rome or Nea Martin in Cartersville.       

    Jennifer Hicks has a bachelor's degree in English from University of West Georgia.  Jennifer is pursuing a Masters in English from University of West Georgia.  Jennifer is a full-time tutor and is supervisor of the part-time tutorial staff at the Rome campus.

    Nea Martin has a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Mathematics from Kennesaw State University.  Nea is a full-time tutor and is supervisor of the part-time tutorial staff at the Cartersville and Marietta campuses.

    Rome Part-Time Tutors:

    Jessica Lindberg, English tutor, earned her B.A. from Earlham College in Richmond, IN, and an MFA in Poetry from Georgia State University.  Jessica has served as editor of the Old Red Kimono and currently writes for Rome Unscene.”

    Andy Bemis has a B.A. in English from the University of Arkansas, a Masters of Education from Berry College, Rome, Georgia, and a MPS from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.
