Expected Outcome:  Students will be able to understand the alterable and unalterable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. 

 

 

Outcome Assessment:   Students will answer multiple choice (MC) questions on an assessment instrument administered to PHED 1010 classes. 

 

 

 

 

 

Performance Targets: 

Primary Performance Target:  In PHED 1010 classes, 80% of students will correctly answer a MC question distinguishing between the alterable and unalterable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. 

 

Secondary Target: Of the students correctly distinguishing between alterable and unalterable risk factors for cardiovascular disease, 70% will be able to identify a factor that will reduce cardiovascular disease risk. 

 

 

 

 

 

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results): 

Primary Performance Target:  43% of PHED 1010 students correctly distinguished between alterable and unalterable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. 

 

Secondary Performance Target:  Of those students who correctly addressed this concept, 51% were able to identify a factor that will reduce cardiovascular disease risk. 

 

 

 

 

Recommended Actions: 

Primary Performance Target not met.

 

Secondary Performance Target not met.

The low percentage of student success on this outcome may have occurred due to confusing content in one of the potential answers in this MC instrument.  It is recommended that this concept be assessed in the next assessment cycle, with a more directed set of potential responses in a similar question.

Outcome Assessment:   Students will answer multiple choice (MC) questions on an assessment instrument administered to PHED 1010 classes. 

 

 

 

 

Performance Targets: 

Primary Performance Target:  In PHED 1010 classes, 80% of students will correctly answer a MC question identifying the dimensions of wellness. 

 

Secondary Performance Target: Of the students correctly answering a MC question identifying dimensions of wellness, 70% will correctly answer a question on the application of knowledge regarding a wellness dimension. 

 

 

 

 

 

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results): 

Primary Performance Target:  65% of PHED 1010 students correctly answered a question assessing their ability to discriminate the dimensions of wellness.

 

Secondary Performance Target: Of those who successfully made this discrimination, 84% correctly answered a question on the application of knowledge regarding the dimensions of wellness, thus achieving the secondary target.  

 

 

 

 

 

Recommended Actions:

Primary Performance Target not met.  Instructors will be requested to review this concept with students, including emphasizing the 6 components of wellness, giving examples of each during instructional activities, and asking students to relate the dimensions to their personal lives through a lab activity.

Outcome Assessment:   Students will answer multiple choice (MC) questions on an assessment instrument administered to PHED 1010 classes. 

 

 

 

 

 

Performance Targets: 

Primary Performance Target:  In PHED 1010 classes, 80% of students will correctly answer a MC question involving healthy/unhealthy approaches for weight management. 

 

Secondary Performance Target: Of the students answering a MC question on healthy/unhealthy approaches to losing weight, 70% will be able to answer a MC question involving a scientific principle of weight management. 

 

 

 

 

 

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results): 

Primary Performance Target: 95% of students correctly identified healthy approaches to weight management.

 

Secondary Performance Target:  43% of students were able to correctly answer a question on the scientific principle of weight management. 

 

 

 

 

Recommended Actions: 

Primary Performance Target met.  No further action required.

 

Secondary Performance Target not met.  Instructors will be encouraged to repeatedly emphasize the fact that approximately 3500 kcal of energy must be expended to reduce stored body fat by one pound, the concept discussed in the secondary target.
