Unit/Team:  Division of Science, Mathematics and Physical Education

Reported By: Soumitra Chattopadhyay

Date Submitted: June 15, 2006

Assessment Period: AY 2005-2006

Related College Goal:

·         Strategic Goal/Objective # I f. Improve instruction by both full- and part-time faculty by supporting professional development, engaging faculty dialogues and utilizing information from learning outcomes feedback.

Unit/Team Goal:

  • To provide high quality instruction in the area of science, mathematics and physical education to prepare the students enrolled in both transfer and career programs to be able to be successful in their chosen area of study
  • To support faculty members from the Division to keep current in their respective academic areas by attending different conferences/workshops to deliver quality instruction to our students

Expected Outcome:

·         The Division will support its faculty members to participate in state/regional/national conferences within the realms of the allocated and available budget; the goal for this year will be that at least two-thirds of the faculty members attend at least one such professional conference that help them use the knowledge gained from those conference(s) to enhance the quality of instruction for the courses they teach

Outcome Assessment:

·         At the end of the year, we will tally how many faculty members from the Division  have attended how many conferences - to find out if we have met the goal set for the year; also every faculty member attending such a conference will be asked to submit a brief report at the end of the year to demonstrate how they have used their experience from the conference(s) attended to enhance the quality of instruction

Performance Targets:

Primary Target:

·         The Division will support its faculty members to participate in state/regional/national conferences; even though we have met the goals set last year; this year the goal is revised so that at least one-half of the faculty members attend at least one such professional conference because of budgetary allocations available for the current fiscal year

Secondary Target:

·         All of the faculty members who attend such a conference will submit a written report

Summary of Data Collected (Performance Results):

·         Faculty members attending such a conference/workshop submitted a report indicating the conferences they attended and how they used the information from the meeting in their classrooms to enhance teaching effectiveness; thus, we have a 100% participation in this regard

·         It has been found that at least 29 professional meetings have been attended by 26 faculty members of the Division, thereby the average number of meetings attended by each faculty member exceeded one meeting per faculty member

·         Amongst that group, 16 tenured or tenure-track faculty members have attended 22 meetings; however, 6 out of 22 faculty members (or 27%) in that group did not attend any professional conference this year

Recommended Actions:

·         Even though we have met both our primary and secondary goals we set for this year - faculty members from our Division, and in particular, those who did not attend any conference this year, will be encouraged to attend conferences/workshops on a continual basis
